Erik got married to Tammi Ruth Saccoman on June 12, 1999, in a waiting area of Folsom State Prison. Later, Tammi said, “We had a Twinkie for our wedding cake. We made it up as we went. Up until I had to depart, the ceremony was fantastic. It was a really solitary night.” She called her relationship with Erik “something that I’ve dreamed about for a long time” in an October 2005 interview with ABC News. And it’s just something really unique that I never imagined owning.”
A book titled They Said We’d Never Make It – My Life with Erik Menendez was self-published by Saccoman in 2005. However, she revealed on CNN’s Larry King Live that Erik “did a lot of editing on the book”.
She said in an interview with People magazine:
It’s challenging for me not to have sex, but it’s not an issue for me. I have to have an emotional attachment, and Erik is my emotional attachment. My relatives don’t get it. Some of them just threw up their hands when it got serious.
Saccoman added that her daughter calls Erik her “Earth Dad” and that she and her travel 150 miles (240 km) each weekend to see him.
“Tammi is what gets me through,” Erik said, speaking about his life sentence. I am unable to consider the sentence. When I do, it’s with a deep sorrow and a deep fear. I start to perspire a lot. I just haven’t accepted it because it’s so terrifying.”
