The Christine Dacera case timeline

December 31, 2020

Last seen partying with at least 11 men at the City Garden Hotel in Poblacion, Makati City to welcome the New Year, Dacera, a 23-year-old Philippine Airlines flight attendant, was last seen socializing with Galido and some of his friends.

Rey Ingles, Louie de Lima, John Paul dela Serna, and Clark Rapinan were later identified as Dacera’s co-worker Rommel Galido and those who first agreed to rent a room.

The next day, the lawmen said De Dela Serna arrived early in the morning, Dacera at noon, and the rest of them over the following hours.

Galido had also invited Gregorio de Guzman, Valentine Rosales, Mark Anthony Rosales, Jammyr Cunanan, and Eduard Madrid. Meanwhile later that night John Paul Halili—who was said to be hotel manager—came aboard.

Her relatives did not hear from her until the morning, when Dacera called them to tell them about the continuing party at the Makati hotel, according to her mother Sharon. CCTV footage with timestamps showed Dacera briefly kissing a guy donning a cap, later identified as Valentine Rosales, before entering a room at 2.52am.

At 3:22am, Dacera is interacting with another male in an adjacent room on the right side of the corridor, as two other males walk by. Three others from one end of the hallway were also seen a few metres away.

At 4.13am, Dacera can be seen being carried back by Dela Serna to the first room.

Later, Rodolfo Rosales and Dela Serna, who both said they are gay, claimed in interviews that Dacera was a friend of theirs and that they would not do anything to her. In an interview with ANC, Dela Serna and Rapinan said they had to return Dacera from Room 2207 because she had already been vomiting in the morning.

Meanwhile, Rosales and Galido said Dacera would have already informed them if she had been raped. Galido recalled finding Dacera in the bathtub of their room at around 10am, believing she was sleeping. He said he ran to De Guzman and Dela Serna to seek assistance after discovering that Dacera was turning blue and appeared not to be breathing at around noon. De Guzman and Dela Serna said they then asked for help from the hotel management and that they tried to revive Dacera with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but failed.

The couple was advised to take her to the Makati Medical Center where she was declared dead on arrival, according to police, due to a ruptured aortic aneurysm. The hospital told the police about the death. Meanwhile, by that time, the other men from the adjacent hotel room had already left.

The body of Dacer was taken to Rizal Funeral Homes in Pasay City at 9 a.m., where it was examined by medico-legal officer Police Major Michael Nick Sarmiento. According to the findings of a medico-legal report by the Southern Police District Crime Laboratory Office that subsequently went viral, the cause of death was “consistent” with what had previously been said to be a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Dacera was also injured in the assault, according to the report, which included bruises on her right hand, thigh, knees, ankles, and foot. Her right thigh exhibited a linear abrasion. During Dacera’s genital examination, deep healed lacerations and abrasions were reported. The document also informed that Dacera was already embalmed during the autopsy.

According to the medicolegal report, police investigators examined Dacera’s body at 1 p.m. The Makati City Police Department, led by Chief Colonel Harold Depositar, subsequently issued information on the death to the press two days after the event.

Despite some other missing details and conflicting reports on the matter, the Philippine National Police issued a separate statement on the episode, claiming that they had already “solved” Dacera’s “rape-slay” case. The PNP Chief Police General Debold Sinas said they had already arrested three of the men they identified as suspects: Dela Serna, Galido, and Halili.

Dacera’s story has gathered a significant following on the internet, with her family, the suspects, and authorities investigating the tragedy continuing to develop it.

The official said that the robbers were armed. “They used force,” he added. Some of the suspects referred to themselves as homosexual, according to the police. For possible COVID-19 infractions by City Garden Grand Hotel in admitting guests for leisure in a hotel designated as a quarantine facility, the Tourism Department issued a show cause order.

Meanwhile, Dacer’s family announced that they had requested another autopsy to dispute the original findings of authorities that she died of natural causes. The injuries on Dacera’s legs and arms, as well as her remains, would provide ample proof of a crime.

However, De Guzman, one of the partygoers who has spoken up, denied “absurd” rumors in several media interviews, claiming he is gay and has never had sexual relations with a woman. Sinas gave the suspects 72 hours to surrender or authorities would “hunt them down.”

Dacera’s mother, Sharon, is demanding justice for her daughter’s death. “I don’t want that somebody will be a victim by this kind of brutality, barbaric,” Sharon told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

She had a blunt message for those responsible for the death of her daughter.

“You treated her like a pig,” she said.

“I don’t want this to happen to another woman who will be treated like that.

“Christine does not deserve this brutality.”

The National Police Chief’s Office (NAPOLCOM) has repeatedly denied that it fired tear gas in the community of Dacera, where 30 people were injured. “The NAPOLCOM spokesperson described as a lie”the allegation that the Philippine police force used tear gas against protesters there.” The PNP official stated that he was informed by his legal team to “stay put” and wait for a counter affidavit because De Guzman had not yet filed one. Reacting to the police order, Ate Belen de Guzman and her mother Claire dela Fuente told CNN Philippines they had been advised by their lawyer to “stay put” and wait until they could file a counter affidavit. They said that Sinas’ order was “without regularity.”

The National Bureau of Investigation’s forensic medicine team is already in touch with the authorities to determine the true cause of Dacera’s death, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra. Later that day, Dacera’s remains were taken to the PNP Headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City, for a private ceremony attended only by her family and a few important friends.

Meanwhile, the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office ordered the release of the three respondents held in connection with the case while awaiting DNA testing, toxicology examination, and histopathological analysis. Preliminary inquiries on the other individuals are pending.

January 7, 2021

In the afternoon, her body was taken by helicopter to General Santos City, where she was buried at a private ceremony with family and friends. Dr Marichi Ramos, a close friend of the Dacera family, said that before it was sent home, the body had been subjected to a second autopsy in which findings would not be shared with the general public. Later in the day, Dela Serna, Rapinan, Galido, and Rosales all repeated their innocence.

January 8, 2021

The National Capital Region Police Office announced the formation of a dedicated inquiry task force to look into the case. NCRPO director Vicente Danao Jr also stated that pre-autopsy embalming procedures could have resulted in contaminated samples taken from Dacera.

January 9, 2021

Dacera’s parents revealed that they had submitted a complaint to PMAJ Michael Nick Sarmiento for gross negligence and gross incompetence in the “irregular and incorrect” drafting of Dacera’s medico-legal report and death certificate, according to the Manila Bulletin.

January 10, 2021

Dacera was buried at the Forest Lake Memorial Park in General Santos City, nearly a week after her death. The identities of Room 2207’s occupants have already been determined by the NBI, however Guevarra promised that they would not be released until they are called.

January 11, 2021

The results of the forensic examination of Dacera’s body are expected to be released shortly, according to Guevarra. Eight out of the 11 people questioned in the case were also represented by their attorneys to present their perspective to authorities. The NBI indicated that it had gathered “encouraging leads” and “pieces of evidence” to determine whether the initial autopsy was conducted correctly.

The official said that so far, there are “encouraging indications” that a crime was committed. He also urged other potential suspects who have yet to come forward to assist them.

January 12, 2021

Lavin stated during a press conference that they had investigated room 2009 of the hotel, as well as rooms 2207 and 2209, for possible evidence relating to Dacera’s death.

He also said that after a thorough analysis and consolidation of all their forensic team’s findings, the bodily fluids collected in the second autopsy have been sent to the Death Investigation Division, which will provide further information once all of the conclusions from their forensics team have been evaluated and consolidated.

On February 15, the police arrested Guevarra along with four others in connection with Dacera’s apparent poisoning. The officer stated that 100ml of urine were taken from Dacer’ s body, which would aid the investigation. He also said that laboratory testing could take a few days to complete.
