Joe Kenda Early Life
On November 14, 1946, Joe Kenda was born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania. His father, William, served as an intelligence officer in the United States Army during World War II and ran a trucking business.
His mother, Virginia was from Colorado Springs. From Čezsoča in what is now Slovenia, his paternal grandparents immigrated in 1913. In 1964, he received his diploma from Greensburg Central Catholic High School.

In 1967, Joe Kenda tied the knot with Mary Kathleen Mohler, his high school sweetheart, after enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1970, Kenda obtained a master’s degree in international relations from Ohio State University, where she had previously graduated with a B.A. in political science.
Kenda thought about going into the Foreign Service, but he decided against it after receiving a confidential briefing from the CIA. In 1973, Kenda started working at his father’s trucking company before enlisting in the Colorado Springs Police Department.
