Ricardo Cruciani’s Charges Explained
Ricardo Cruciani, 68, a doctor who raped several of his patients and overdosed them on strong pain medication to keep them under his control, died at the facility at 6:30 a.m., according to the New York City Department of Correction. It said the reason for death is under examination.
Emergency medical technicians responded to the jail when they found an inmate, Cruciani, unconscious and unresponsive with cardiac arrest at 5:50 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the Fire Department of New York. The inmate was declared dead upon arrival by the EMS team.
Cruciani was being held at Rikers Island until his sentencing in September. His death, the 11th this year at a New York City Department of Correction facility, is the latest in a string of fatalities at Rikers, a jail notorious for reports of violence and brutal conditions.

On July 29, the court found him guilty, and after two weeks in prison, he was discovered on Monday with a white sheet around his neck, suggesting suicide. The fact that they were understaffed caused the lack of surveillance, according to the guards’ statements, but most people believe foul play because there have been several prisoner deaths at Rikers Island.
Some people think that solitary confinement in prisons is the leading cause of security issues and suicides. They say that criminals deserve this punishment. Others think that this is not a good solution and that we should find another way to deal with these problems.
