Spoilers ahead for Average Joe Season 2.
Average Joe Season 2 takes Joe Washington far away from his normal life in Pittsburgh and drops him into a dangerous family mystery in Cape Town. What begins as another attempt to protect the people he loves turns into a search for his supposedly dead father, Teddy, and the criminal secrets Teddy left behind.
By the end of the eight-episode season, Joe finally learns the truth about Teddy, Imani discovers what happened to her mother Jamila, and Sipho’s control over the situation falls apart. But the finale does not give Joe a peaceful ending. Instead, the last few minutes reveal that the drug shipment at the center of the story belongs to an even more dangerous group, putting Joe’s family in immediate danger again.
What Is Average Joe Season 2 About?
Season 2 picks up after Joe Washington’s life was turned upside down by the discovery that his late father had lived a secret criminal life. Teddy was connected to dangerous criminals and had disappeared with money and other valuable items before his supposed death.
The new season sends Joe, Leon, Cathy and Touch to Cape Town after a threat against Joe’s family points them toward Africa. There, Joe meets Imani, a young woman who claims to be Teddy’s daughter. Her story forces Joe to question what he knows about his father and his own family.
The season slowly reveals that Teddy is not simply a man from Joe’s past. He is still alive, and his actions have created a much bigger problem than Joe expected.
Average Joe Season 2 Recap
Joe arrives in Cape Town with Leon and Touch looking for answers. They become caught in the middle of a violent conflict involving Sipho, a powerful local crime boss, and the mystery surrounding Teddy.
At the same time, Imani is trying to understand what happened to her mother, Jamila. Her search eventually connects her directly to Teddy. As Joe and his friends follow the clues, the situation becomes more dangerous, with betrayals coming from both outside and inside their own group.
Cathy becomes increasingly focused on the money and drugs connected to Teddy. Her choices put her relationship with Leon under enormous pressure. Leon has spent much of the series standing beside Cathy even when her decisions put everyone in danger, but Season 2 pushes him toward a breaking point.
The biggest revelation comes when Joe finally meets Teddy. The man Joe thought was dead is very much alive, and the reunion is nothing like the emotional father-son moment Joe might once have imagined. Teddy is more interested in protecting himself than repairing his relationship with his children.
Joe also learns that Imani is connected to him through Teddy, making her his half-sister. Their relationship becomes one of the more important emotional parts of the season because Joe sees the damage his father caused in another family while also dealing with the damage Teddy caused in his own.
Who Killed Jamila?
One of the biggest mysteries of Season 2 is what happened to Jamila, Imani’s mother.
The finale finally gives the answer through a flashback. Teddy killed Jamila.
Jamila had discovered the truth about Teddy and was ready to expose him. She also told Imani enough about Joe and Teddy for Imani to understand that the story she had been given about her family was not the whole truth.
When Jamila threatens to contact the police, Teddy shoots her. This revelation completely changes Imani’s understanding of her childhood. Teddy was not simply an absent father who abandoned her. He was responsible for her mother’s death and then continued living while allowing Imani to believe something else had happened.

What Happens to Teddy?
Teddy’s actions finally catch up with him in the finale.
Sipho has Joe and the others under his control and wants to know where the heroin is. Imani is tortured in an attempt to force Joe to reveal the location, but Teddy shows little concern for his own daughter’s suffering.
Teddy even tries to use the situation for his own benefit. He reveals the enormous value of the heroin shipment and attempts to make deals that would help him survive.
Imani eventually confronts Teddy about Jamila. She keeps asking him whether he killed her mother. Teddy finally admits the truth.
Imani shoots him.
That is the end of Teddy’s story in Season 2. His death also gives Imani the answer she has spent much of the season searching for, although it comes at a terrible emotional cost.
What Happens to Sipho?
Sipho is another major threat throughout the season, but his control begins to collapse during the finale.
Phyllis seeks help from people in the local community who have also suffered because of Sipho and his drug operation. Their support becomes important during the final confrontation and helps create an opening for Joe and the others to escape.
Sipho ultimately does not survive the season. His death removes one of the biggest immediate threats facing Joe and his friends, but it does not solve the larger problem surrounding Teddy’s drugs.
Why Does Leon Want a Divorce From Cathy?
Leon and Cathy reach a breaking point during the finale.
Leon still cares about Cathy, but he is tired of following her into dangerous situations and watching her put money ahead of everything else. Cathy’s decisions have repeatedly placed their lives and the lives of their friends at risk.
Leon tells Cathy that if they survive, he wants a divorce.
Later, Cathy threatens Imani after Teddy’s death. Leon steps between them and makes it clear that Cathy will have to shoot him before she can hurt Imani.
That moment shows how far Leon has changed. He is no longer willing to protect his marriage at the cost of his own values. He can still care about Cathy without accepting everything she does.

What Does Joe Do With the Heroin?
After Teddy and Sipho are dealt with, Joe, Leon and Touch have to decide what to do with the money, gold and heroin left behind.
Joe proposes a deal. He, Leon and Touch will split the money and gold, Touch gets the Aston Martin, and Cathy gets the heroin.
Joe’s reasoning is simple: none of the three men is a drug dealer, while Cathy already understands that world and wants the shipment.
It is an uncomfortable decision because Joe is still helping keep a large quantity of heroin in circulation. He may have escaped Teddy’s direct influence, but he has not completely escaped the criminal world his father dragged him into.
More importantly, the decision creates the final problem of the season.
Average Joe Season 2 Ending Explained
Joe initially believes the nightmare is finally coming to an end. Teddy is dead, Sipho is gone, Imani knows the truth about her mother, and Joe can finally think about returning home.
Then Joe receives a phone call on Angela’s phone.
The woman on the other end tells Joe that her people have Angela and Jennifer. She also says that the FBI agent who was protecting them has been killed.
The caller wants one thing: the location of the heroin.
This is the major twist of the finale. Joe and his friends thought the heroin was simply another piece of Teddy’s criminal empire. The final phone call reveals that there are people above the criminals they have already been fighting.
Cathy immediately understands the danger. She does not want Joe to reveal where the drugs are because the heroin is now the key to their fortune and survival.
Joe, however, only wants to know that Angela and Jennifer are alive.
Jennifer briefly gets on the phone and calls Joe her father. This confirms that she is alive at that point in the conversation.
Joe refuses to give the caller what she wants. Instead, he threatens to come after her if she hurts his family.
The woman then orders her people to kill Angela and Jennifer.
Joe hears screaming and then two gunshots.

Are Angela and Jennifer Dead?
This is where the finale deliberately leaves viewers with a question.
Average Joe does not actually confirm that Angela and Jennifer are dead.
The audience hears the gunshots, but the episode does not show either woman being shot. There are no bodies and no later scene confirming their deaths.
That distinction matters because the series has already played with supposedly final events and hidden information. The show leaves enough room for the next story to reveal that Angela and Jennifer survived or that the situation was not exactly what Joe believed it was.
So the safest answer is that their fate is unknown at the end of Season 2.

Imani has spent years trying to understand why her father disappeared and what happened to her mother. Joe cannot undo what Teddy did, but he can give Imani something Teddy never gave her: a brother who is willing to stand by her.
Before they separate, Imani tells Joe that she is glad he is her brother. Joe also plans to stay in South Africa for a little longer before returning home.
Imani and Phyllis plan a road trip connected to Jamila’s past, giving Imani a chance to learn more about her mother and where she came from.

Will There Be an Average Joe Season 3?
The Season 2 finale clearly leaves room for another season. Teddy and Sipho’s stories are finished, but the larger criminal organization connected to the heroin has now been introduced. Joe’s family is also in immediate danger.
However, the Season 2 ending itself does not provide a complete answer about what happens next. The final phone call is primarily a cliffhanger, leaving Joe’s next move and Angela and Jennifer’s fate unresolved.
Yes. Imani shoots Teddy after he admits that he killed her mother, Jamila. His death brings his story to an end, although the consequences of his criminal activities continue to affect Joe and the others.
Teddy killed Jamila. He shoots her after she discovers the truth about him and threatens to expose him. Imani eventually learns the truth and confronts Teddy about her mother’s death.
Yes. Sipho dies during the final conflict. His death removes one of the main threats facing Joe and the others, but the heroin creates another dangerous problem before the season ends.
Their deaths are not confirmed. Angela and Jennifer are kidnapped, and Joe hears gunshots after the people holding them threaten to kill them. The show does not show their bodies, so their final fate remains unknown.
