George Pickering’s son had a severe stroke in January 2015 and was placed on life support at Tomball Regional Medical Centre in Tomball, Texas. He had a history of seizures.
His son, was to be put on a ‘terminal wean’ which would gradually wean him off of all life-supporting devices, per a hospital order. They even started getting ready for George III to donate his organs. But Pickering says his son needed more time. He said,
“They were moving too fast. The hospital, the nurses, the doctors. I knew if I had three or four hours that night that I would know whether George was brain dead.”
The father said to KPRC that George III had recovered and that he had experienced a similar circumstance with his son in the past.
Pickering and SWAT personnel fought for hours as they attempted to convince the father to give up. Yet, Pickering claimed to have seen signs that his son was still alive during that period. He said,
“During that three hours, George squeezed my hand three or four times on command”
After facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Pickering eventually turned himself in and was imprisoned for 11 months. George III is well today and this month Pickering was freed after one charge was dropped and another was downgraded. Credit for time served was granted to the father.
After being accused of serious assault with a deadly weapon, a father was granted release from prison and claims that his actions were motivated solely by love. The accused father with tears expressed remorse for the incident, stating that he never intended to harm anyone but was driven by an overwhelming instinct to shield his loved ones.
The court’s decision to grant his release was met with mixed reactions with some sympathizing with his intentions while others remained skeptical of his claims.
