Landra Gould was born to Jewish immigrant parents and grew up in Henderson, Nevada.
Her parents opposed the relationship when she was in high school, and they married after college. Since Gould was Jewish, her family objected to the connection; he was 89 years old at the time of their marriage. Reid’s father was so opposed that, during a date, he got into a fistfight with him and allegedly punched his future father-in-law – the amateur boxer did, in fact, win the fight. The wedding took place on September 12, 1959 in Utah, where Reid’s family accepted the union.
Reid converted to Mormonism after her parents joined the religion, but she continued to observe Jewish holidays with her family until her father’s death. Throughout his entire career, Gould has followed Reid as he progressed up the ranks in the Nevada Assembly, to Senate Majority Leader.
