Harry Reid, the former US senator and Senate minority leader who served Nevada for 36 years, died on Tuesday (28 December 2021) at the age of 82. In remembrance of Reid, Obama’s condolences have readers wondering about his personal life – he was survived by his wife Landra Gould and five children. On Tuesday, Nevada’s congressional representative for over three decades, Sen. Harry Reid, died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.
The Senate majority leader had surgery at John Hopkins Cancer Center in 2018 after a tumor was discovered. A year later, a New York Times interview revealed that the then 79-year-old was “unable to walk without using a walker.” President Obama posted a moving letter he wrote to Reid after hearing about his deteriorating condition, and Biden paid tribute, recalling his boxing-to-politics career.
The former President mentions Reid’s wife Landra, so social media is curious to know more about her.
Who is Harry Reid’s wife Landra?
Landra Gould was born to Jewish immigrant parents and grew up in Henderson, Nevada.
Her parents opposed the relationship when she was in high school, and they married after college. Since Gould was Jewish, her family objected to the connection; he was 89 years old at the time of their marriage. Reid’s father was so opposed that, during a date, he got into a fistfight with him and allegedly punched his future father-in-law – the amateur boxer did, in fact, win the fight. The wedding took place on September 12, 1959 in Utah, where Reid’s family accepted the union.
Reid converted to Mormonism after her parents joined the religion, but she continued to observe Jewish holidays with her family until her father’s death. Throughout his entire career, Gould has followed Reid as he progressed up the ranks in the Nevada Assembly, to Senate Majority Leader.
In a 2015 interview with CNN, Reid said: “She’s never changed. She’s 74 years old. She could win a beauty contest today. She is the nicest person. She has been a wonderful mother, a terrific wife to me. I wish there was a way I could express to everyone how fortunate I am.”
Did they have any children?
Rory (1963), Key, Josh, and Leif Reid are the children of Elizabeth Hughes and Madeleine Ruth. There isn’t much information on their daughter, but all the Reid sons are attorneys.
Rory is a lawyer and a Democrat, while Key works at The Reid Firm. Josh Reid was formerly an attorney for the city of Henderson, and Leif is a member of Lewis Roca’s Regulatory and Government Practice Group.
It’s likely that Harry Reid’s net worth of $10 million will be split between his large family.
