Minerva Academy Season 1 Ending Explained: What Happened to Francesco?

Minerva Academy is an Italian teen drama and mystery series set at the strict Minerva Military High School in Naples. The eight-episode first season arrived on Netflix on September 22, 2026. The story follows Salvo, a young cadet who enters Minerva with a reason that is very different from that of the other students. He wants to find out what happened to his close friend Francesco.

At first, Francesco’s disappearance looks like a possible murder or a serious accident. However, as Salvo digs deeper, he discovers that the truth is connected to Diego Giordano, the commander’s son, the senior cadets, and the culture of silence inside the academy.

The Season 1 finale, titled The Ball, finally gives Salvo the answer he has been looking for. Netflix’s official description says that Salvo gets his answers while Diego confronts his past and the academy faces the consequences of its secrets and abuse of power.

What Is Minerva Academy About?

The story takes place inside Minerva Military High School, where young students live under strict rules, military training and a powerful senior-junior hierarchy.

Salvo enters the academy because his friend Francesco disappeared from the school. Salvo and Francesco had grown up together in a group home, and Francesco was more than an ordinary friend to him. Salvo considered him almost like an older brother.

Because the explanation surrounding Francesco’s disappearance does not make sense to Salvo, he decides to investigate the academy himself.

His questions quickly make him unpopular. The more he asks, the more he realizes that some students and adults know much more about Francesco than they are willing to say.

The mystery eventually leads him toward Diego Giordano, the son of Commander Achille Giordano.

What Really Happened to Francesco?

The biggest question in Season 1 is whether Francesco is dead.

The answer is no.

Francesco is alive.

He was not murdered, and he was not killed in an accident at Minerva. Instead, Francesco chose to leave after suffering humiliation and emotional pain connected to his relationship with Diego and the treatment he received from other students.

Francesco had developed romantic feelings for Diego. He even wrote Diego a personal letter explaining his feelings. Unfortunately, the private letter became known to other students.

Once the letter became the subject of gossip, Francesco was humiliated.

Diego was frightened by the situation. He was worried about his reputation, his future and, most importantly, how his father would react.

Instead of openly supporting Francesco, Diego pulled away.

The situation became even worse because of the behavior of the older cadets. The strict culture at Minerva allowed humiliation and bullying to become part of the problem.

Eventually, Francesco decided that he could no longer stay at the academy.

He left.

Why Did Francesco Stop Talking to Salvo?

This is one of the saddest parts of the ending.

Francesco did not disappear because he stopped caring about Salvo. He disappeared because he was ashamed of what had happened to him.

He did not want Salvo to see him after the humiliation. He also did not want to explain everything that had happened.

For Francesco, disappearing seemed easier than returning to Minerva and facing the same people and the same questions.

Meanwhile, Salvo was left believing that something terrible might have happened to his friend.

That is why Salvo eventually enters Minerva himself. He refuses to accept the simple explanation given to him.

How Does Salvo Discover the Truth?

Salvo’s investigation slowly becomes more dangerous.

He questions students, follows clues and tries to understand what happened before Francesco left the academy. His investigation eventually points toward the senior cadets and Diego.

By Episode 7, evidence connected to Francesco begins exposing the senior students. Salvo uses the Mak P celebration to publicly challenge Diego and Max rather than allowing the matter to remain hidden.

At this point, Salvo understands that Francesco’s disappearance is not just about one person.

What Did the Senior Cadets Do to Francesco?

The older cadets played an important role in Francesco’s humiliation.

Once his feelings for Diego became known, Francesco became the target of gossip, humiliation and abuse.

The situation shows one of the biggest problems inside Minerva. The academy has strict rules, but the informal power of senior students can be just as important.

Students are expected to be strong, follow orders and avoid showing weakness. That environment makes it difficult for someone like Francesco to ask for help.

As Salvo investigates, Max eventually becomes more cooperative and provides information about what happened.

Vice Commander Teresa Bonaiuto also becomes important because she refuses to simply allow the matter to disappear.

What Did Commander Achille Giordano Hide?

Commander Achille Giordano knew more about the situation than he initially admitted.

He knew about the connection between Francesco and his son Diego. He also knew about Francesco’s letter to Diego.

Instead of allowing the complete truth to come out, Achille hid the letter and helped maintain a simpler version of events.

According to that version, Francesco was simply a student who could not adapt to Minerva.

But that was not the complete story.

Achille’s main concern was also protecting Diego and the reputation of the academy. His actions were meant to control the situation, but they created an even bigger problem.

Salvo spent months searching for Francesco without knowing that he was actually alive.

Diego also continued carrying guilt and confusion because he did not know the full truth.

Why Is Diego Removed From Minerva?

Diego’s entire identity is connected to Minerva.

He has spent years trying to become the perfect student his father expects him to be. For Diego, being a successful cadet is not simply about school. It is about earning his father’s approval.

But his connection with Francesco exposes how much fear exists beneath that image.

Diego had feelings for Francesco, but he was afraid to admit them. When Francesco’s letter became known, Diego tried to distance himself from him.

His fear helped make the situation worse.

As Salvo’s investigation continues and more evidence comes out, Diego can no longer remain protected by his father’s position.

He is eventually removed from Minerva.

For Diego, this is a huge loss because the academy was the future he believed he was supposed to have.

At the same time, leaving Minerva gives him a chance to finally ask himself what he wants instead of simply following his father’s expectations.

Does Diego Kill His Father?

No. Diego does not kill Achille.

Near the end of the season, Diego confronts his father. He is angry after discovering how much Achille knew about Francesco and how long the truth was kept from him.

The confrontation becomes extremely serious when Diego points a gun at Achille and fires.

It appears for a moment that Diego has killed his own father.

But Achille survives.

The gun contains a blank cartridge, so Diego does not actually kill him.

The scene is important because the real damage is emotional. Diego has finally reached the point where he can no longer accept his father’s control.

Achille is alive, but the trust between father and son has been badly damaged.

How Does Salvo Finally Find Francesco?

The final episode is called “The Ball.” Netflix describes the episode as the point where Salvo finally gets his answers while Diego confronts his past.

Before the final reunion, Diego learns that Francesco is still alive.

With help from Esposito, Diego is able to reach Francesco. This forces Diego to face the person whose disappearance has caused so much guilt and confusion.

Francesco is initially reluctant to reconnect with Diego because Diego is closely connected to one of the most painful periods of his life.

But Diego tells him something important.

Salvo never stopped looking for him.

That finally brings Francesco back toward Minerva.

During the night of the ball, Francesco and Salvo eventually meet in the library.

The scene is much quieter than the rest of the finale. There is no huge action sequence. Instead, the focus is on the two friends finally facing each other.

Francesco explains why he left. He was ashamed, hurt and unable to continue living with what had happened.

Salvo is relieved to discover that his friend is alive, but he is also angry because Francesco allowed him to believe that he might be dead.

The reunion is therefore emotional but not completely simple.

Is Francesco and Salvo’s Friendship Fixed?

Not instantly.

The ending does not pretend that everything can return to normal just because Francesco is alive.

Salvo has spent a long time searching for him. Francesco has spent that same period dealing with shame and the consequences of what happened at Minerva.

Both of them have changed.

Still, the reunion gives Salvo something he desperately needed: an answer.

More importantly, Francesco finally has a chance to tell his own story instead of allowing Minerva’s version of events to define him.

What Happens to Achille and Diego?

Achille survives the confrontation, but his relationship with Diego is badly damaged.

For much of the season, Diego has tried to earn his father’s respect. He believes that following the rules and becoming a strong cadet will make Achille proud.

But the truth about Francesco shows Diego that his father’s idea of strength has also caused pain.

The final confrontation represents Diego breaking away from the identity his father created for him.

Achille remains connected to Minerva, but Diego is no longer willing to live simply according to his father’s expectations.

What Happens to Minerva Academy?

Minerva does not simply disappear after the truth comes out.

The academy remains standing.

That is important because the show is not saying that exposing one secret automatically fixes an entire institution.

The investigation forces Minerva to face the consequences of its culture, abuse of power and attempts to keep certain things hidden. Netflix’s description of Episode 8 also points directly to the academy facing the consequences of its secrets and abuse of power.

The students have changed, but the institution itself still exists.

What Does the Ending of Minerva Academy Really Mean?

The ending is about much more than finding a missing student.

At the beginning of the series, Salvo believes he is investigating a disappearance. He thinks there must be one clear answer.

Instead, he discovers a chain of fear, secrecy, humiliation and pressure.

Francesco was hurt by what happened to him. Diego was afraid of his father. The senior cadets used their position against Francesco. Achille tried to protect his son and the academy by hiding information.

Each decision made the situation worse.

The series therefore asks an important question: What happens when an institution cares more about discipline and reputation than the people inside it?

Francesco’s story provides the answer.

He did not need another punishment. He needed someone to understand what he was going through.

Salvo’s decision to keep asking questions eventually breaks through the silence.

Is the Minerva Academy Season 1 Ending Happy?

It is better described as bittersweet.

The biggest mystery has a positive answer because Francesco is alive.

Salvo finally sees his friend again.

But the damage caused by everything that happened cannot simply disappear.

Francesco still has to deal with his painful memories. Salvo has to accept that Francesco chose to disappear instead of asking him for help. Diego loses Minerva and has to rebuild his identity outside his father’s control.

Even Achille survives, but his relationship with his son is deeply damaged.

So the finale gives the characters answers, but not a perfect happy ending.
