Toni Stone was married to US Army’s ‘first black officer’

On 9 February 2022, the Google Doodle honors female African-American baseball player Toni Stone, so the question of whether she was married is currently popular. As part of Black History Month, legendary baseball player Toni Stone was honored with an animated Doodle by Google.

She was the first woman to play regularly in a major American men’s professional sports league and one of three women to join the Indianapolis Clowns, breaking down the barriers of sport in the 1950s. As people learn more about her incredible legacy, her personal life has also become a topic of interest.

Toni Stone was married to Aurelious Pescia Alberga

In the Fillmore District of San Francisco, at the age of 23, Stone relocated from St Paul, Minnesota. There she met Captain Aurelious Pescia Alberga at Jack’s Tavern, San Francisco’s first black-owned nightclub.

In 1950, they wed; the age difference between them was 37 years. Alberga was an Oakland native and served as a non-commissioned lieutenant in World War I, where he graduated from officer candidate school. As per UPI, he became the first black second lieutenant in the Army after graduating from officer candidate school in 1919.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Stone referred to him as “the first black person in the US military to hold a higher rank.” He trained and instructed Company A, 365th Infantry, before leaving the service in the 1920s. Alberga went on to work for a San Francisco bail bondsman after his service. The veteran died of natural causes at age 103 in 1988 at a care facility in Alameda, California.

They were a loving aunt and uncle

It’s uncertain whether the pair had children, but they were clearly close to their nieces and nephews: Maria A Bartlow (niece), Monica D Franks (great niece), Odin Bartlow (great nephew), and Shawn Bartlow.

They spoke to Google for the Doodle project, recalling: “As kids, we remember our Aunt Toni and her husband Aurelius Alberga (Uncle Pescia). Aunt Toni and Uncle Pescia would always encourage us to figure out what we wanted to do in life and go for it regardless of what others may say.”
