YNW Melly is an American rapper and singer from Gifford, Florida. He is best known for his songs “Murder on My Mind” and “Mixed Personalities”, the latter of which features vocals from Kanye West.
In 2018, Melly rose to prominence with the release of his single “Murder on My Mind”, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song would go on to be certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In October 2019, Melly was charged with two counts of first-degree murder stemming from a shooting that took place in South Florida in 2017. If convicted, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Melly’s sophomore album, We All Shine, was released on January 18, 2019. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and included the single “Mixed Personalities”, which featured vocals from Kanye West.
On February 23, 2020, Melly was arrested and charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of two men in Florida in October 2019. If convicted, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment. On June 4, 2020, it was announced that Melly would be tried as an adult for the double murder.

Jamell Demons was born in Gifford, Florida, on May 1, 1999. He was reared by his single mother, Jamie Demons-King, and has no idea who his father is. Donte “Tha Gift” Taylor identifies himself as YNW Melly’s father.
When he was 14 years old, Demons-King became pregnant with him and gave birth to him in ninth grade. Later, his mother could not afford housing or necessities, so she moved to a less affluent part of Gifford. At the age of 15, he joined the Bloods gang and later put his songs on SoundCloud when he was 15 years old.
Demons was arrested for shooting at a group of students near Vero Beach High School in late 2015, and he was subsequently convicted of aggravated battery, public discharging of a firearm, and two counts of aggravated assault, receiving several months in jail.
