Black Clover Season 2 finally returns with an episode that wastes little time getting back to the story. After the long break, Episode 1, titled The Battle Begins picks up with the Clover Kingdom preparing to rescue Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance from the Dark Triad.
But Asta is not with the main group when the attack begins. He is still training with Liebe under Nacht because his new Devil Union power is far from stable. At the same time, Yuno joins the Magic Knights heading into the Spade Kingdom, where Morris is preparing the ritual that could open the gates to the underworld.
The result is a premiere built around two battles happening at once. Yuno and the other Magic Knights move toward the enemy, while Asta and Liebe try to turn their new bond into a power they can actually control.
Where Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 Begins
The episode starts after the events that ended the first part of the anime’s story. Yami and William have been captured by the Dark Triad, and the threat from the Spade Kingdom has become much more serious.
The Clover Kingdom cannot simply wait for another attack. The Magic Knights have to enter enemy territory and try to rescue their captains before the Spade Kingdom completes its plan.
The biggest problem is that the enemy’s plan is not only about capturing Yami and William. The Dark Triad needs their power for a much larger ritual involving the underworld. That makes the rescue mission a race against time.
Asta and Liebe Struggle to Master Devil Union
While the main group prepares for the raid, Asta remains behind with Liebe and Nacht.
Asta has already formed a contract with Liebe, but simply having a devil inside his grimoire is not enough. He needs to learn how to combine his power with Liebe’s anti-magic through Devil Union.
Nacht makes the training difficult on purpose. He does not want Asta to depend on brute strength or luck. Asta and Liebe have to work together as equals.
This is important because Asta has never treated Liebe like an ordinary weapon. Their relationship is different from the usual human-devil arrangement. Asta needs Liebe to fight with him, not simply give him more power.
The training is not easy. Asta and Liebe repeatedly fail to maintain the transformation. They can feel the power, but controlling it is another matter.

Asta and Liebe Finally Reach Devil Union
The biggest moment of the episode comes during Asta and Liebe’s fight with Nacht.
Instead of trying to force the transformation separately, Asta and Liebe finally manage to synchronize. For a brief moment, they enter Devil Union.
The increase in power is immediately clear. Their anti-magic is strong enough to break through Nacht’s spell.
However, this is not a complete victory.
Asta cannot maintain Devil Union for long. The transformation disappears almost as quickly as it appears. So, while the episode confirms that Asta and Liebe can use the form, Asta has not mastered it yet.
That small detail matters. Asta has gained access to one of the powers he will need against the Dark Triad, but he cannot simply walk into the Spade Kingdom and use it whenever he wants.
Yuno Joins the Attack on the Spade Kingdom
While Asta continues training, Yuno takes part in the attack.
Yuno has more than one reason to fight the Spade Kingdom. He wants to save William, but the conflict is also deeply personal for him.
Zenon, one of the Dark Triad members, was responsible for the attack that devastated the Golden Dawn. Yuno survived that attack, but many of his comrades did not.
Even with that personal anger, Yuno has to remain focused. The mission is not about revenge alone. The Magic Knights have to rescue their captains and stop the Spade Kingdom’s plan before the situation becomes impossible to control.
Yuno therefore enters the battle as both a fighter and a Magic Knight responsible for the people fighting beside him.

The Magic Knights Enter Enemy Territory
The raid finally begins, marking the real start of the Spade Kingdom conflict.
The Clover Kingdom’s strongest fighters move into enemy territory with one clear purpose: rescue Yami and William and stop the Dark Triad.
But entering the Spade Kingdom does not mean that the Magic Knights have already won. The Dark Triad still has control of the situation, and the ritual connected to the underworld is already moving forward.
That gives the battle a much larger purpose than simply defeating individual enemies.
If the Magic Knights fail to stop the ritual, rescuing Yami and William may not be enough to prevent a much bigger disaster.
What Is Morris Planning?
Another important part of the episode takes place inside the Spade Kingdom.
Morris, the former Diamond Kingdom researcher, is working on the process needed to open the gates of the underworld.
This connects the events happening on the battlefield with the larger threat hanging over the story.
The Magic Knights are fighting to save their captains, while Morris is working toward a plan that could unleash powerful devils into the world.
That is why the timing of the raid is so important. The longer the Magic Knights take, the closer the Spade Kingdom gets to completing its ritual.
Why Asta Is Not Part of the First Attack
One of the most interesting choices in Episode 1 is keeping Asta away from the opening stage of the raid.
Normally, Asta would be one of the first people viewers would expect to see charging into a dangerous battle. This time, however, he is not ready.
Devil Union gives him an enormous boost, but the form only lasts for a very short time. Taking an unstable power into a battle against the Dark Triad would be extremely risky.
So Asta has his own battle to fight.
While Yuno and the Magic Knights fight the enemy, Asta and Liebe have to learn how to control the power that could eventually change the balance of the war.

Asta and Yuno Take Different Paths
The episode also continues one of the most important ideas in Black Clover: Asta and Yuno are rivals, but they do not always grow in the same way.
Yuno is already taking part in the attack on the Spade Kingdom. He has to make decisions under pressure and fight while carrying the weight of the Golden Dawn’s losses.
Asta, meanwhile, is still training. His challenge is more personal. He has to understand his relationship with Liebe and learn how to use their combined power.
Neither character is completely ready for what is coming.
That makes their parallel stories interesting. Yuno is already on the battlefield, while Asta is preparing the power that may be needed later.
What Does The Battle Begins Mean?
The title “The Battle Begins” is a simple description of what this episode does.
The previous part of the story was largely about preparing for the Spade Kingdom threat. Season 2 finally moves that preparation into action.
The Magic Knights cross into enemy territory. Asta and Liebe achieve their first Devil Union transformation. Morris continues the underworld ritual. Yuno faces the conflict connected to his past.
Nothing about the situation feels settled.
The episode is not trying to finish the war in its first chapter. Instead, it places every major character on the board and starts pushing them toward the same dangerous conflict.
Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained
At the end of the episode, Asta and Liebe have proven that Devil Union is possible, but they have not mastered it.
That distinction is important.
Asta now knows that he can reach the form, but he still needs to improve his control and timing. Meanwhile, the Magic Knights have already started their attack on the Spade Kingdom.
This creates two connected storylines.
- Asta and Liebe must master Devil Union.
- Yuno and the Magic Knights must survive the Spade Kingdom operation.
- The rescue of Yami and William has to happen before the enemy’s plan goes too far.
- Morris continues working toward opening the gates of the underworld.
The episode therefore ends with the war only beginning. Asta has gained a new weapon, but he is not yet ready to use it at its full potential.

What Happens Next?
The biggest question after Episode 1 is how quickly Asta can master Devil Union.
The Magic Knights cannot afford to wait forever because the situation in the Spade Kingdom is already dangerous. At the same time, sending Asta into the battle before he can control his new power could put him in even greater danger.
Yuno’s fight is also likely to become more personal as the raid develops. His connection to the Spade Kingdom and his history with Zenon give his part of the war a different emotional weight.
For now, the two rivals are fighting on separate fronts. But the bigger war will eventually bring their paths together again.
Yes. Asta and Liebe successfully activate Devil Union, but Asta cannot maintain the transformation for very long. He still needs more training to control it.
Asta’s Devil Union is still unstable. He stays behind to train with Liebe and Nacht so he can better control the power before entering the larger battle.
Yuno joins the Magic Knights’ attack on the Spade Kingdom. He is determined to help rescue William and fight the forces responsible for the attack on the Golden Dawn.
The main threat comes from the Dark Triad and the Spade Kingdom. Morris is also important because he is helping with the plan involving the underworld.
