Christopher John Chittell (born 4 October 1936) is an English actor. He is best known for playing Eric Pollard in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale from 1983 to 2018.
Chittell was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father a quantity surveyor. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Blackburn, and then studied drama at RADA before training as an accountant.
He made his stage debut at the Library Theatre, Manchester, in 1959. From 1959 to 1963, he worked as a repertory theatre actor in Manchester, Liverpool and York. In Emmerdale, Chittell’s character, Eric Pollard, was one of the show’s original characters. He was one of only three actors to appear in every episode of the show since its launch in 1972. In February 2018, Chittell announced his retirement from the show, which aired its final episode with him in it on 18 January 2019.
He has also appeared in other long-running ITV soap operas, including Crossroads (1971–73), Coronation Street (1973–74) and The Bill (1989–93).
