Habeas Corpus Season 1 Ending Explained: Is Jonathan Finally Free?

Spoilers ahead for the entire first season of Habeas Corpus.

Habeas Corpus ends by giving Jonathan the freedom he has been waiting years for, but the victory comes with a cost. Inez Franco and her students finally manage to challenge the conviction that kept Jonathan in prison for six years. He is declared innocent and walks out of prison.

But that is not where the story really ends.

The final episode turns the attention back to Inez’s past when Marina reveals that she has been hiding her real identity. She is actually Larissa Linhares, the daughter of Eliane Linhares, a woman whose conviction is closely connected to the part of Inez’s life she has tried to leave behind.

So while Jonathan’s case is finally closed, a much more personal case is just beginning.

What Is Habeas Corpus About?

The Brazilian legal drama follows Inez Franco, a former criminal lawyer who has become a law professor. She brings together a group of students to investigate wrongful convictions and challenge cases in which the justice system may have failed.

Their first major case is Jonathan, a young man who has spent six years behind bars for a crime he insists he did not commit. The investigation gradually uncovers serious problems with the evidence and the way the original case was handled.

Does Inez Prove Jonathan Is Innocent?

Yes. Jonathan is finally declared innocent and released from prison.

However, his freedom does not come from one dramatic piece of evidence. Inez and the students slowly build a much stronger case against the original conviction.

They uncover an alibi, problems with Jonathan’s confession, weaknesses in the testimony used against him and a new account from Helinho, another man connected to the crime.

Helinho says that Jonathan was not involved. His testimony also helps the defense understand how Evandro, his uncle, had a personal reason to turn suspicion toward Jonathan. With the Public Prosecutor’s Office supporting the criminal review, Jonathan’s original conviction is eventually annulled and a new trial is ordered.

Why Doesn’t Jonathan Accept Tina’s Deal?

Tina tries to offer a way out that would appear easier for Jonathan. Under the proposed arrangement, his punishment could be reduced, allowing him to leave prison sooner.

There is one serious problem: Jonathan would still have to accept responsibility for a crime he says he never committed.

Inez refuses to treat that as justice. Jonathan has already lost six years of his life because of a conviction he maintains was false. A shorter prison sentence would not change the fact that the system would still call him guilty.

Instead, Inez chooses to confront Tina directly and calls her as a witness.

What Happens During Jonathan’s New Trial?

The new trial becomes a major test for Inez as well as Jonathan. She has avoided criminal court for years because of the trauma connected to an earlier case involving Eliane.

When Inez returns to court, the memories become overwhelming and she suffers a panic attack. Even so, she eventually enters the courtroom and faces the place she had spent years trying to avoid.

Her questioning of Tina focuses on how Jonathan’s confession was obtained, how the investigation was conducted and how the testimony against him was handled.

Inez also makes a larger argument about the way Jonathan was treated. He was a young Black man from a poor background who could easily become the convenient suspect in a case where investigators wanted someone to blame.

Most importantly, Inez admits that she herself was once part of a system she now questions. She acknowledges that ambition and professional success had influenced the way she approached her work in the past.

Jonathan Is Finally Released

The court ultimately accepts that Jonathan’s original conviction cannot stand.

The scene is emotional because his freedom cannot give him back the time he lost. His mother died while he was incarcerated, and he missed years of family life. He also has to return to a world that changed while he was behind bars.

What Happens When Jonathan Leaves Prison?

When Jonathan finally walks out, Marina is waiting across the street.

The two share a simple smile. There is no large romantic reunion or promise about their future. The moment simply shows that Marina’s feelings for Jonathan are still there.

Earlier, Jonathan had admitted that he loved Marina during a phone call from prison, and Marina told him she loved him too. Silas overheard the conversation, leaving Marina’s existing relationship in a difficult position.

The finale deliberately leaves Jonathan and Marina’s future open. Jonathan’s immediate challenge is not romance. It is learning how to live freely again.

What Happens to Tina?

Jonathan’s release also brings consequences for Tina.

The internal affairs authority recommends that Tina be removed from her position as head of the state police, while Flávio also becomes the subject of an investigation.

The finale also exposes problems within the law firm. Murilo, Pedro and Ana face questions about corruption and the firm’s previous relationship with Tina. Their decision to help Jonathan does not erase the questionable connections that existed before.

This keeps the ending from becoming a simple story about good lawyers defeating one bad police officer. The show makes it clear that corruption and institutional problems are much wider than one person.

What Happens to Inez After Jonathan’s Case?

Jonathan’s case changes Inez’s life.

After the trial, Inez becomes a partner at Borrmann, Hueda & Villar. The firm is renamed Borrmann, Hueda, Villar & Franco Advogados Associados, and the students continue working in a new criminal-review department.

For Inez, this is more than a career move. She began the season as someone who had walked away from criminal law. The courtroom represented trauma and guilt. By returning to court for Jonathan, she finally begins to confront that part of her past.

Do Inez and Murilo End Up Together?

No.

Murilo tells Inez that his wife Bianca has returned home and is pregnant. Although there is still affection between Murilo and Inez, they decide to keep their relationship professional.

This fits Inez’s character arc. Her main story is not about choosing a romantic partner. It is about deciding what kind of lawyer she wants to be and whether she can face the mistakes of her past.

Who Is Marina Really?

This is the biggest twist in the finale.

Marina is not actually Marina. Her real name is Larissa Linhares.

Larissa is the daughter of Eliane Linhares, a woman whose case is directly connected to Inez’s past.

For most of the season, Marina appears to be a talented student who is deeply interested in wrongful-conviction cases. The finale reveals that her interest was personal from the beginning.

Larissa deliberately entered Inez’s world because she wanted to reopen her mother’s case and confront the woman she believed had helped put Eliane in prison.

The reveal also explains the young boy Larissa has been raising. He is not her son. He is her younger brother. After Eliane was imprisoned, Larissa took responsibility for him.

Why Was Eliane Sent to Prison?

This is where the ending becomes even more complicated.

Larissa tells her younger brother that their mother went to prison because she was trying to protect her.

The series then reveals what happened on the night of the original crime. Larissa was still a child when she caused a fire on land belonging to a politician. Eliane took responsibility in order to protect her daughter.

That means Larissa has spent years trying to free her mother while hiding her own role in the event.

This changes the story completely. Eliane’s case is not simply about an innocent woman being wrongly accused. It is also about a mother taking the blame for her child and the daughter living with that secret for years.

Why Is Larissa’s Reveal So Important?

Larissa’s identity changes the meaning of almost everything that happened between her and Inez.

She was not simply a student who happened to believe Jonathan. She had entered Inez’s life because she wanted answers about her mother.

At first, Larissa’s goal was partly about accountability. She believed Inez had played a role in destroying her family. But after seeing Inez fight for Jonathan and admit her own mistakes, their relationship changes.

By the end, Inez knows who Larissa really is. Larissa no longer needs to hide behind the name Marina. Most importantly, the two women now have a reason to work together.

What Is the New Case at the End?

The next case for Inez’s new criminal-review department is Eliane Linhares.

This is the perfect continuation of Inez’s story because Jonathan’s case involved a wrongful conviction created by other people. Eliane’s case is different. Inez herself admits that she helped build the case against Eliane years earlier.

Now she has to investigate her own professional history.

She must ask whether she missed important evidence, whether her ambition affected her judgment and whether the conviction she once helped secure was actually unjust.

Larissa will also have to confront her own past and admit the truth about the fire.

What Does the Ending of Habeas Corpus Mean?

The ending is really about the difference between winning a case and repairing an injustice.

Jonathan is free, but his life has been permanently changed. Six years are gone. His mother cannot come back. His family relationships have changed. His freedom is a victory, but it is not a complete restoration.

That is why the final twist works so well. The show does not suggest that one successful case fixes the justice system. Instead, Jonathan’s freedom proves that a wrongful conviction can be challenged.

Then the series immediately shows another person who still needs that chance.

Inez begins the season by trying to correct an injustice committed by a system she once trusted. She ends the season preparing to investigate a case that is tied directly to her own past.
