Howie Long is an American sports commentator, and former professional football player. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts and played college football at Villanova University. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft and played for the Raiders from 1981 to 1993. He won a Super Bowl with the Raiders in XVIII and was named to eight Pro Bowls. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
After retiring from playing football, Long became a sports commentator for Fox NFL Sunday. He has also appeared in several films, including Broken Arrow (1996), Firestorm (1998), Dreamcatcher (2003), and Invincible (2006).

Long was born on January 6, 1980, in Somerville, Massachusetts. He is the son of Katherine (née Tynan) and Howard Long Sr. His father was of Irish descent and his mother was of Italian ancestry. As a child, Long dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame or Boston College. He played organized football for the first time in seventh grade. Howie Long Education
Howie Long chose to attend Villanova University, where he played defensive end and was a member of the 1979 national championship team. In 1980, he was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his college career with 16 sacks and was inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame in 1989.
In 1981, Long was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the NFL Draft. He played for the Raiders from 1981 to 1993 and won a Super Bowl with the team in XVIII. During his 13-year career, he was named to eight Pro Bowls and recorded 84.5 sacks.
