John Carell is best known as the son of Steve Carell, a famous actor and comedian. On NBC’s comedy series The Office (2005–2011, 2013), he portrayed Michael Scott and contributed on occasion as a producer, writer, and director.
As John has grown up, his father, Steve Carell has done his best to keep them out of the public eye, rarely discussing about him in interviews and only taking about him to a handful of red carpet events. The whole family attended the F1 Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Netherlands, in August 2023.

John Carell has four uncles and raised in nearby Acton, Massachusetts. His grandfather, Edwin A. Carell (1925–2021), was a mechanical engineer, and his grandmother, Harriet Theresa (née Koch; 1925–2016), was a psychiatric nurse.
His grand maternal uncle, Stanley Koch, worked with scientist Allen B. DuMont to create the cathode ray tubes. His grandfather was of Italian and German descent and his grandmother was of Polish ancestry.
His grandfather’s surname was originally Caroselli but it was changed to Carell in the 1950s. John Carell was raised Roman Catholic.
