Despite what you may have heard, Ngugi wa Thiongo is alive and well. His family has confirmed that he is still with us, despite rumors to the contrary. This isn’t the first time this has happened- in fact, he used to hear similar death stories about himself all the time. However, according to his Wikipedia page, he is very much alive and well. So earlier tonight when social media was flooded with condolence messages for the author of The Upright Revolution, many people were shocked to learn that the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.
Ngugi wa Thiongo Family
James Ngugi was the name given to him at birth. He was of Kikuyu ancestry and was born in Kamiriithu, near Limuru in Kenya’s Kiambu province. Mwangi’s mother was assaulted at the Kamiriithu home guard post, and his half-brother Mwangi was actively involved in the Kenya Land and Freedom Army. His family was affected by the Mau Mau Revolution.
He started his career as a school teacher, teaching at Alliance High School in Accra before enrolling at Makerere University College in Kampala, Uganda to pursue his studies. He presented The Black Hermit, his play about an African hermit who lives on the continent’s fringes and becomes involved with the civil rights movement, at The National Theatre in June 1962 while still a student.

According to the source, Ngugi wa Thiong’o is in good health and not suffering from any physical ailments or accidents. He is currently being surrounded by death rumors. Despite numerous setbacks, Ngugi wa Thiong’o has been Kenya’s leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature for years. However, Professor Abdulrazak Gurnah, a Tanzanian-born author, received the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature instead.
The Kenyan National Theatre finally performed Thiong’o’s “I’ll Marry When I Want” 45 years after it was first released.
