The ending of Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 1, “Circle of Life,” does not give viewers a simple answer to the season’s biggest mystery. Instead, it brings several storylines together and leaves River Cartwright facing a very personal threat.
By the end of the episode, former Slow Horses are being targeted, Slough House has been erased from the Park’s database, Diana Taverner is dealing with suspicious outside money, and River discovers that his estranged father, Frank Harkness, is back in London.
Why Are Former Slow Horses Being Killed?
The episode opens with Struan Loy, a former Slow Horse who is now teaching martial arts to children. His new life comes to a sudden end when two people approach him while pretending to be interested in his shipping-container business.
They attack Struan, trap him inside a container and set it on fire. Later, another former Slow Horse, Kay White, is also killed. These deaths make it clear that Struan was not simply the victim of an unfortunate accident.
Jackson Lamb eventually learns about Struan’s death after Emma Flyte secretly gives him information about what happened. Lamb and River begin to understand that someone appears to be deliberately targeting people connected to Slough House.
The premiere does not reveal the identity of the people behind the attacks. Instead, it establishes the murders as one of the season’s central mysteries. The episode also shows that River is becoming connected to the threat.
Why Was Slough House Removed From the Database?
Another major mystery involves the Slough House team itself. The entire unit has been wiped from the Park’s database.
This is more serious than a normal computer error. The agents have effectively disappeared from the official system, and they are not even being paid. Catherine Standish later discovers that the deletion was deliberate and appears to have come from the highest levels of the Service.
When Jackson Lamb confronts Diana Taverner, she claims that she does not know why it happened. Her response raises another question: is Diana actually in control of what is happening inside the Park?
The episode does not answer that question yet. However, Diana’s dealings with Peter Judd make the situation even more suspicious.
What Is Going On With Diana Taverner and Peter Judd?
Diana is now First Desk, but her new position comes with its own problems. She is dealing with Peter Judd and a group of wealthy associates who are visiting the Park.
The bigger problem is the money behind Diana’s dealings with Judd. It turns out that the money did not simply come from Judd himself. There is an anonymous third party behind the funding.
That detail could become important later in the season because it suggests that someone outside the normal MI5 structure may have a financial interest in what is happening.
For now, the connection between the mysterious funding, Slough House being erased and the attacks on former agents remains unclear.
What Happens at David Cartwright’s Funeral?
The funeral of David Cartwright becomes the main meeting point for several of the episode’s storylines.
River is understandably affected by his grandfather’s death, while Jackson continues trying to understand what is happening around Slough House. Diana is also dealing with the fallout from her dealings with Peter Judd.
Despite the serious mood, the episode includes some of Jackson Lamb’s trademark humor. River’s eulogy for his grandfather provides one of the lighter moments in an otherwise emotional sequence.
The funeral also becomes the place where River discovers something far more disturbing.

Is Frank Harkness Back?
Yes. River spots his estranged father, Frank Harkness, watching the funeral from a distance.
Frank, played by Hugo Weaving, has a dangerous history with River. His unexpected return is therefore immediately suspicious, especially because it happens while former Slow Horses are being targeted.
River follows Frank after spotting him. Frank eventually confronts him and then tries to leave. River refuses to let him simply disappear again and jumps onto the hood of Frank’s car.
Frank suddenly brakes, throwing River onto the road, before driving away. Jackson Lamb, Shirley Dander and JK Coe witness what happens.
The sequence ends with Frank getting away and River left behind, giving the season a major cliffhanger.
Is Frank Harkness Behind the Murders?
The episode does not confirm that Frank is responsible.
His return certainly makes him suspicious, but there is no clear evidence in Episode 1 that he is the person ordering the attacks on former Slow Horses.
What we know is that Frank has returned to London, he was watching David Cartwright’s funeral, and he clearly does not want to have a conversation with River. His real purpose is left unanswered.
Flickering Myth also describes Frank’s return as teasing an antagonistic role for the season, but the premiere stops short of revealing exactly how he fits into the larger mystery.

What Does the Ending Actually Mean?
The ending is designed to connect several mysteries without solving them.

Why Is River Important to the Mystery?
River is already dealing with the death of his grandfather, but the appearance of Frank Harkness changes his situation completely.
Frank is not simply a random person from River’s past. His history with River makes his sudden appearance at the funeral difficult to ignore. At the same time, River is becoming connected to the investigation into the deaths of former Slow Horses.
That puts River in an unusual position. His personal history and his professional problems may now be moving toward the same mystery.
What Should We Expect From Episode 2?
Episode 1 leaves several major questions unanswered. The biggest ones are who is killing former Slow Horses, why Slough House was erased from the Park’s system, who is behind the mysterious funding and what Frank Harkness actually wants.
The next episode is therefore likely to build on the threats introduced in the premiere rather than immediately explaining everything. The official episode information confirms that Season 6 continues the story across six weekly episodes, with the season adapting material from Mick Herron’s Joe Country and Slough House.
