Dillard began the season as one of the show’s strangest but most interesting characters. He lived in Manhattan and had developed an unusual emotional connection with walkers. He even treated some of them almost like friends.

That relationship is destroyed after Negan kills Dillard’s walker companions. Dillard cannot accept what has happened. His grief turns into obsession, and he eventually becomes one of the season’s main threats.

Does Dillard Die?

Yes. Dillard dies during his final confrontation with Maggie and Negan.

Negan actually stabs Maggie, but the wound is not meant to kill her. He is trying to create an opening to attack Dillard and stop him before he kills them both. Jeffrey Dean Morgan later explained that Negan knows Dillard is likely to kill Maggie if he does nothing, so stabbing her becomes a dangerous way to buy time.

The plan works, but the fight becomes even more violent. Dillard gets the upper hand and appears ready to kill Negan. Maggie eventually recovers enough to intervene and cuts off Dillard’s arm.

Dillard is left mortally wounded. Instead of simply killing him, Negan stays with him as he dies.

Dillard later reanimates as a walker. That ending is especially fitting because walkers were among the few beings he genuinely felt connected to. The man who spent so much of his life treating the undead as companions ultimately becomes one of them.

Why Does Negan Stab Maggie?

At first, Negan stabbing Maggie looks like a shocking betrayal. However, that is not what is really happening.

Dillard has both of them under his control and wants Negan to prove that Maggie means nothing to him. If Negan refuses, Dillard is prepared to kill Maggie. Negan realizes that he has very little time to act.

Maggie’s new leadership role creates a possible new direction for the series, while Negan has a clear reason to remain in Manhattan. Their search for new threats and the future of the community could easily provide the foundation for another season.
