Warning: Major spoilers ahead for The Gift of Deceit Season 1.
Netflix’s The Gift of Deceit (original title: Dom de Iludir) is a Brazilian drama about family secrets, stolen artwork, manipulation, and a relationship built on lies. At the centre of the story is Maíra Rossetti, a young woman whose mysterious illness has made her mother, Lúcia, extremely protective. When Irina Petrov enters their lives as a spiritual healer, she appears to offer Maíra a chance at a better life. But Irina has a hidden connection to a criminal family, and her arrival sets off a chain of events that neither woman can control.
The ten-episode series features Alice Wegmann as Maíra, Marieta Severo as Lúcia, and Nanda Costta as Irina. Directed by Mauro Mendonça Filho, the show mixes family drama with a crime story involving stolen paintings, financial fraud, and dangerous relationships.
The Season 1 finale brings these storylines together. Maíra learns that Irina originally approached her as part of a plan to exploit her family’s wealth. Meanwhile, Lúcia finally reveals the heartbreaking secret behind her controlling behaviour. The ending leaves Maíra with a difficult decision: should she return to the woman she loves or try to repair her relationship with the mother she has spent years fighting against?
The Gift of Deceit: Story and Main Information
Before getting into the ending, it helps to understand the background of the series. The story begins with Lúcia Rossetti, a wealthy art collector who is desperate to find a cure for her daughter Maíra’s mysterious illness. Her fear makes her willing to consider unusual treatments, and that is where Irina enters the picture.
Irina presents herself as a spiritual therapist who can help Maíra through alternative healing methods. Lúcia initially sees her as a possible solution, while Maíra develops a much closer emotional connection with her. Unlike her mother, Irina seems to understand Maíra’s desire for freedom and independence.
However, Irina is not simply trying to help the family. She is connected to the Petrov family’s criminal activities, led by her father, Bóris. Their operation targets wealthy people through carefully planned deception. The Rossetti family’s valuable art collection and money make them an attractive target.
Why Did Irina Deceive Maíra?
Irina’s relationship with Maíra begins with a hidden purpose. She enters the Rossetti household as a spiritual healer, knowing that Lúcia is desperate to help her daughter. The family’s wealth gives the Petrov group a reason to get close to them.
As Irina spends more time with Maíra, the relationship becomes romantic. Maíra feels understood and starts believing that Irina is someone who can help her escape her mother’s constant control. For the first time, she feels that she can make decisions about her own life.
But Irina’s original plan is much darker. The Petrov family wants to gain access to the Rossetti fortune through Maíra. Their plan involves marriage, forged documents, fraud, and eventually a plot that puts her life in danger.
The complicated part is that Irina eventually develops genuine feelings for Maíra. She is no longer simply following the original plan without emotion. However, her feelings do not change the fact that she entered Maíra’s life with dishonest intentions.
How Does Maíra Discover Irina’s Real Identity?
Maíra’s understanding of Irina changes when evidence of the Petrov family’s plan comes to light. Messages between Irina and her sister Bárbara reveal that Maíra was seen as an opportunity to gain money. Bárbara encourages Irina to use her charm to win Maíra’s confidence.
This discovery is particularly painful because Maíra believed their relationship was genuine from the beginning. She had trusted Irina because she seemed different from her mother. Now she realises that the person who promised her freedom was also manipulating her.
The investigation also uncovers forged documents and other evidence connected to the criminal operation. The situation becomes much more serious than a simple financial scam, especially when the plan puts Maíra’s safety at risk.
Maíra now has to accept that Irina’s feelings may have become real, but the relationship started with a lie. She cannot easily separate the woman she fell in love with from the person who helped deceive her.
What Happened to Bárbara and the Petrov Family?
The Petrov family’s criminal activities eventually lead to a violent confrontation. Their plans begin to fall apart as the police investigate the fraud and the people involved. The wedding and the events surrounding the police operation become a turning point for the family.
Bárbara dies during the police operation, creating another painful consequence of the family’s criminal activities. Her involvement in the scheme has helped bring Maíra into danger, but her death also shows how far the Petrov family’s actions have gone.
Bóris, meanwhile, refuses to accept the collapse of his operation. Rather than taking responsibility, he becomes increasingly focused on revenge. His obsession with controlling his family and punishing the Rossettis leads to an even more dangerous situation in the final episode.

What Was Lúcia Hiding From Maíra?
One of the most emotional revelations in the finale concerns Lúcia’s past. Throughout the series, Maíra sees her mother as someone who wants to control every part of her life. Lúcia decides what is best for her daughter and struggles to accept that Maíra wants independence.
However, her behaviour is connected to a tragedy that happened many years earlier. Maíra actually had a twin sister named Teresa. Both babies were born prematurely and suffered from serious heart problems.
Lúcia had travelled to Paris during her pregnancy despite medical advice. She became unwell during the journey and was later admitted to hospital after returning to Brazil. The twins were born prematurely, and both needed heart transplants. Unfortunately, only one donor heart was available at the time.
Maíra survived, but Teresa died. Lúcia never recovered from the loss and carried enormous guilt over what happened. She believed that her decisions during pregnancy had contributed to the tragedy.
This explains why Lúcia became so protective of Maíra. She had already experienced the death of one daughter and could not bear the thought of losing the other. Every time Maíra faced a possible danger, Lúcia’s old fear returned.
Still, the revelation does not make all of Lúcia’s behaviour acceptable. Her fear explains why she acted that way, but Maíra has also suffered because of her mother’s constant control. The truth gives them a chance to understand each other, but it does not erase their past problems.
Why Does Bóris Attack Lúcia in the Final Episode?
Bóris wants revenge after the criminal operation falls apart and his family suffers serious losses. He believes that Lúcia played a major role in the events that destroyed his plans, so he decides to confront her directly.
He enters the Rossetti home and takes Lúcia and Maíra hostage. During the confrontation, he forces Lúcia to reveal information about the family’s crimes, including the financial activities connected to the art collection.
The situation becomes even more dangerous when the police move in. Bóris threatens to kill Maíra in front of her mother, hoping to make Lúcia experience the same pain he believes she caused him.
When he fires his weapon, Lúcia steps in front of Maíra and is shot. Bóris then turns his attention back to Maíra, but a police sniper shoots him before he can fire again. Bóris dies at the scene, while Lúcia survives and is taken to hospital.
His death ends his immediate threat to the Rossetti family, but it cannot undo the damage caused by the Petrov family’s crimes.

The Gift of Deceit Ending Explained: Why Does Maíra Choose Lúcia?
After the criminal operation is exposed, Maíra and Irina face the consequences of their actions. Irina remains in prison, while Maíra is released after the court proceedings. Her case involves a finding of diminished criminal responsibility, although questions surrounding the medical report used in the trial create further complications.
Maíra eventually visits Irina in prison because she wants to know whether anything between them was real. She has spent much of her life surrounded by secrets, and she no longer wants another relationship based on lies.
Irina tells her that she truly loves her. She explains that the person she was before falling in love with Maíra no longer exists. Their conversation makes it clear that Irina’s feelings have changed, but it does not repair the damage between them.
Maíra admits that she felt happy and free when she was with Irina. However, after discovering the truth about the Petrov family’s plans, she can no longer return to that version of their relationship.
The meeting ends without reconciliation. Irina stays in prison and Maíra returns to live with Lúcia.
This decision is not simply about choosing her mother over her lover. Maíra has realised that love alone cannot repair a relationship when trust has been destroyed. She can believe that Irina developed genuine feelings for her and still decide that staying together is not the right choice.

What Does the Final Bath Scene Mean?
The final scene shows Maíra back at the Rossetti home with Lúcia. The family art collection is gone because the police have seized the paintings and documents connected to the investigation.
Instead of leaving her mother, Maíra decides to stay. In the final moments, she sits beside the bathtub and gently washes Lúcia’s hair.
The scene is important because it reverses the relationship that viewers have watched throughout the series. For years, Lúcia has been the one caring for Maíra and making decisions on her behalf. Now Maíra is the one taking care of her mother.
The moment suggests that the two women may be ready to rebuild their relationship. However, it does not necessarily mean that Maíra has completely forgiven Lúcia. The look on her face leaves some uncertainty about what she is thinking and whether their relationship can truly change.
The ending is quiet, but it carries a lot of emotional weight. After so many lies, crimes, and family tragedies, Maíra chooses to return home and face the past rather than pretend it never happened.
