Her daughter, Liv, is also involved, making what should be a normal professional meeting much more complicated.
The storyline gives the episode its title. Wagon Burner is the name of the rather outrageous romance novel written by Charlotte. The unusual book fits the show’s sense of humour, where serious conversations about ageing, relationships and work are often mixed with deliberately awkward or ridiculous situations.
But Alex has much bigger problems outside the office. She cannot stop thinking about Ruari and why he came back from university so suddenly.
Why Did Ruari Leave University?
Ruari’s situation becomes the main mystery of the episode. He eventually makes it clear that he does not want to continue at university, but he gives Alex very little information about what happened.
Alex naturally wants an explanation. From her point of view, Ruari has barely started university and has already returned home. She knows there must be more behind his decision, but Ruari refuses to give her a proper answer.

Yes, Alex makes it clear that she wants more than an undefined arrangement.

What Is Alex Really Struggling With?
Episode 2 makes the central idea of Youth clearer. Alex is not simply worried about getting older. She feels as if she is running out of time to make choices for herself.
Her son is supposed to be becoming independent, but instead he has returned home with a serious problem. Her parents are getting older and need more attention. Her job comes with its own pressures, and her relationship with Patrick is becoming emotionally complicated.
Alex wants a life that belongs to her, but almost everyone around her seems to need something from her.
That is what makes the title Youth interesting. The series is not really about trying to become young again. It is about what it means to reach an age when you suddenly become very aware that time is limited.
Youth Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained
The ending does not give us a clean solution to either of Alex’s biggest problems.
Ruari is still not explaining what happened at university. Alex knows that something serious has gone wrong, but she does not have enough information to understand the full situation.
At the same time, Patrick and Alex have admitted that their relationship means more than a simple casual hookup. But instead of bringing them closer, that honesty exposes how difficult a relationship would be for both of them.

Alex began the series believing that Ruari leaving home would finally give her a chance to focus on herself. Episode 2 shows how quickly that idea falls apart.
