DEI Purple Meaning and Origin

DEI Purple also called DEI Violet or DEI Magenta is an internet slang term used in gaming discussions. It refers to a theory that video games using a lot of purple, violet, or magenta in their artwork and visuals are connected to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) ideas and are more likely to be poorly received or fail commercially.

The phrase became part of the wider culture-war discussion around modern video games. It is usually used by critics of so-called “woke” games, although it is also used jokingly by people who make fun of the theory. The basic joke is simple: see a game covered in purple, call it DEI Purple and treat the color as a warning sign.

What Does DEI Purple Mean?

In simple terms, DEI Purple means the idea that purple-colored game artwork is a sign of a DEI-focused or “woke” video game. People using the term often point to purple or magenta-heavy screenshots from several unrelated games and argue that they share a common visual style.

The important part is that this is an online theory and meme. There is no general rule in the video game industry saying that the color purple proves a game was made because of DEI policies. Purple is also a normal artistic choice and has been used in games for many years.

The term became interesting as a meme because it takes something as ordinary as a color palette and gives it a much bigger cultural meaning.

DEI Purple Origin

The earliest known example connected to the idea appeared on the Steam Community forums on August 15, 2024. A Steam user named Gloaf posted a discussion on the Dragon Age: The Veilguard forum titled “Overuse of Purple Indicates DEI garbage.”

The post argued that the use of purple in several recent games was connected to what the poster described as DEI projects. It mentioned games including Forspoken, Saints Row, Flintlock, Tales of Kenzera, Gotham Knights, Shadow Gambit, and Neo Cab.

That Steam post is considered the earliest known example of the specific idea that purple could act as a visual sign of a “DEI” game. The name DEI Purple, however, became more widely used later as the idea moved onto other social platforms.

How the DEI Purple Meme Spread

The idea did not become a major meme overnight. It gradually moved from gaming forums to YouTube and social media.

On September 30, 2024, the YouTube channel Let’s Gundam It published a video discussing the purple-and-DEI theory. This helped take the idea beyond the original Steam discussion.

Then, on January 2, 2025, X user @Mangalawyer shared a collection of games with purple-heavy color schemes. The post joked about the color palette turning someone into a “non-buynary gamer.” The post later received thousands of likes and became another recognizable example associated with DEI Purple.

A screenshot of that post was later shared on the Gamingcirclejerk subreddit, where users mocked the idea that purple could be used to identify failed or “woke” games. This is an important part of the meme’s development because the phrase was no longer being used only as a serious criticism. It was also becoming a joke about the criticism itself.

Why Is Purple Connected to DEI?

The theory focuses on a visual pattern. Purple and magenta are noticeable colors, and some modern games use them heavily in environments, lighting, promotional artwork, menus, or character designs.

People promoting the DEI Purple idea began collecting screenshots from different games and placing them next to each other. When several images shared a similar purple or magenta appearance, the similarities were presented as evidence of a larger trend.

This makes the meme easy to understand visually. A person does not need to know the entire history of the debate. A collage of purple game screenshots followed by the words “DEI Purple” is enough to communicate the joke.

At the same time, sharing a similar color palette does not by itself establish that different games had the same development goals. Color choices can come from lighting, fantasy themes, character design, marketing decisions, or simple artistic preference.

DEI Purple and Asmongold

The term received another burst of attention in 2026 through streamer Asmongold.

In June 2026, clips circulated of Asmongold discussing the use of purple and magenta in footage connected with God of War: Laufey. He treated the color as a warning sign and connected it with the same visual style associated with earlier examples of the DEI Purple theory.

The discussion continued later in September 2026. An Asmongold Shorts video published on September 29 focused on the same subject and attracted more than 635,000 views in a day. That helped bring the phrase back into gaming discussions and introduced it to people who may not have seen the original 2024 posts.

Is DEI Purple a Real Gaming Trend?

There is a real visual trend that the meme points toward: many games use purple, violet, and magenta because these colors can create a strong fantasy, futuristic, mysterious, or dramatic look.

But the stronger claim behind the meme is much harder to prove. A purple color palette does not establish that a game was designed around DEI policies, nor does it prove that the game will fail.

That distinction is why DEI Purple works better as internet slang than as a serious method for judging a game. The phrase takes a visual similarity and turns it into a cultural signal. Some users use it sincerely, while others use it as satire.

DEI Purple as a Meme

The meme format is usually straightforward. Someone collects screenshots of games with strong purple or magenta color schemes and places them in a collage. The images are then presented as examples of “DEI Purple.”

Sometimes the post is meant as a serious warning about modern gaming. Other times, the entire point is to exaggerate the theory and make fun of people who believe that a particular color can reveal a game’s politics or quality.

This double meaning is a big reason the phrase has lasted. The same image can be shared by someone making a genuine criticism and by someone making fun of that criticism.

Why Did DEI Purple Become Popular?

The biggest reason is that it turns a complicated argument into something very easy to recognize. Instead of discussing game development, writing, representation, corporate decisions, or marketing for several paragraphs, a meme can simply show a row of purple screenshots.

It also fits the way gaming arguments often spread online. A small visual detail can become a symbol for a much larger debate. In this case, purple became the symbol.

The meme also benefits from being easy to parody. Once people began mocking the idea, “DEI Purple” could be used in two opposite ways: as a serious complaint about games or as a joke about how some gamers interpret game design.
