Verity Movie Recap

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Verity.

Verity is a psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel of the same name. The 2026 movie is directed by Michael Showalter and stars Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford, and Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford. The story mixes mystery, romance, obsession and murder inside a beautiful but unsettling house in Vermont.

At the center of the movie is one question: Was Verity really a cold-blooded killer, or did everyone misunderstand the story she wrote?

The movie never makes that question completely easy to answer. That is what makes the ending of Verity so important.

What Does the Title Verity Mean?

The word verity means truth or something that is true. The word comes from the Latin verus, meaning “true.”

That meaning is not accidental. The entire story is built around the idea of truth. Lowen finds one version of the truth in Verity’s manuscript, but another version appears later. The audience is then forced to decide which story deserves to be believed.

Verity Movie Recap

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer who is having trouble finding success. Her life changes when she receives an unusual offer from a major publisher.

Verity Crawford is a famous bestselling author known for writing dark stories from the point of view of villains. However, Verity has been badly injured in a car accident and can no longer finish her popular book series.

Her husband, Jeremy Crawford, hires Lowen to move into their Vermont home and finish the remaining books using Verity’s notes.

Lowen needs the money, so she accepts.

Once she arrives at the Crawford house, things quickly become uncomfortable. Verity is confined to a wheelchair and appears unable to speak or move normally. Jeremy takes care of her while also looking after their young son, Crew.

Lowen soon learns that the family has already suffered a terrible loss. Jeremy and Verity had twin daughters, but one of them, Harper, died in a drowning accident.

Jeremy believes Harper’s death was an accident. But Lowen begins to notice strange things about Verity and the family.

Lowen Finds Verity’s Secret Manuscript

While searching through Verity’s writing material, Lowen discovers something she was never supposed to see.

It is a hidden manuscript called So Be It.

At first, Lowen thinks it may be another piece of Verity’s writing. But as she reads it, she realizes that it appears to be an autobiography.

The contents are horrifying.

In the manuscript, Verity describes herself as a deeply selfish woman who struggled with jealousy and resentment toward her own children. Most disturbing of all, the manuscript appears to say that Verity deliberately allowed Harper to drown.

According to the manuscript, Verity was jealous of the love Jeremy had for their daughter. The death was not an accident. It was murder.

Lowen is horrified, but she cannot stop reading.

The more she learns, the more she begins to believe that the woman sitting silently upstairs is not helpless at all.

Is Verity Really Faking Her Condition?

Lowen starts to suspect that Verity is pretending to be incapacitated.

There are moments when Lowen feels as if Verity is watching her. The house becomes increasingly frightening, and Lowen starts questioning what is real and what might be in her head.

At the same time, Lowen becomes closer to Jeremy.

Jeremy is still dealing with the death of his daughter and the condition of his wife. Lowen feels sympathy for him, but their relationship gradually becomes romantic.

This creates another problem. Lowen is not simply investigating Verity anymore. She is also becoming emotionally involved with Verity’s husband.

The film uses this relationship to make Lowen’s judgment even more complicated. She wants to believe the manuscript because it gives her a reason to distrust Verity and a reason to feel less guilty about falling for Jeremy.

Jeremy Reads the Manuscript

Eventually, Lowen decides that Jeremy needs to know what she has found.

She gives him the manuscript.

Jeremy reads Verity’s apparent confession and is devastated. He has spent years believing that Harper’s death was an accident. Now he believes his wife intentionally killed their daughter.

Jeremy confronts Verity.

This is one of the biggest moments in the movie because Verity finally drops much of the helpless act. She reacts, proving that she is capable of more than she had allowed the family to believe.

For Jeremy, the manuscript is enough.

He believes Verity murdered Harper, and his grief turns into rage.

Why Does Jeremy Kill Verity?

Jeremy suffocates Verity.

Lowen does not simply walk away from what happens. She becomes involved in hiding the truth about Verity’s death.

The two of them make the death look like something that could have happened naturally or accidentally.

The movie then makes the situation even darker. Jeremy takes Verity’s body to the lake and puts her in the water, recreating the circumstances surrounding Harper’s death.

This is one of the major differences from the novel. The movie spends more time showing the immediate aftermath of Verity’s death rather than simply jumping ahead in time.

Is Verity Really Dead?

Yes. Verity dies after Jeremy attacks her.

But her death does not answer the biggest question in the story.

Was Verity actually guilty?

That is where the final twist becomes important.

Verity Movie Ending Explained

The central twist of Verity is that the manuscript may not be what Lowen thinks it is.

The story has always presented two possible versions of what happened.

In the first version, the manuscript is real. Verity really was a manipulative and dangerous woman who deliberately caused Harper’s death. She then pretended to be helpless after the accident. If this version is true, Jeremy believed the truth and killed Verity after discovering what she had done.

But there is another version.

In the alternative explanation, Verity’s manuscript was not a confession at all. It was a writing exercise sometimes described as antagonistic journaling. The idea was that Verity wrote from the mind of a villain to understand how a truly terrible character would think.

Under this version of events, Verity loved her children and Harper’s death was an accident.

The manuscript was only fiction.

The letter also claims that Jeremy discovered the manuscript before Lowen arrived. He believed it was real and tried to kill Verity by causing the car accident. Verity survived and then pretended to be completely incapacitated because she was afraid Jeremy would kill her.

If that explanation is true, everything changes.

Jeremy is not a grieving father who killed a monster. He is a man who murdered his wife because he believed a fictional manuscript was real.

So, Was the Manuscript True or Was the Letter True?

The movie does not give us a simple answer.

That is the point of the story.

The manuscript makes Verity look guilty. It contains extremely disturbing details and seems to explain her behavior.

But the alternative explanation also makes sense. Verity is a successful writer who spends her career thinking like villains. She could have created the manuscript as an exercise and then written the letter to explain it.

There is no completely reliable person left to settle the argument.

Verity is dead. Jeremy believes the manuscript. Lowen has her own reasons for believing what she wants to believe.

That leaves the audience trapped between two possible truths.

Why Does Lowen Hide the Truth?

Lowen’s decision is perhaps the darkest part of the ending.

She has already helped Jeremy cover up Verity’s death. She is also in love with him.

If Verity’s letter proves that the manuscript was fake, Lowen has to face a terrible possibility: she may have helped a murderer get away with killing his wife.

But if the manuscript is true, then Jeremy killed a woman who had murdered their daughter.

Lowen cannot know for certain which story is true.

Instead of exposing the uncertainty, she chooses the version that allows her relationship with Jeremy to continue.

That is why the ending is less about solving a murder and more about the power of choosing which story to believe.

What Is the Meaning of the Ending?

The ending of Verity is really about the difference between truth and belief.

Lowen begins the story as a writer looking for facts. She thinks words can reveal what happened.

By the end, she learns that words can also hide the truth.

Verity writes stories. Lowen writes stories. The manuscript tells one story, while the letter tells another. Even the characters begin to act as if their lives are part of a book where someone else controls the narrative.

The title therefore becomes more meaningful at the end. Verity means truth, but the movie never gives the audience a clean version of it.

Instead, it asks a more uncomfortable question: What if the truth is impossible to prove?

Does the Movie Have a Different Ending From the Book?

Yes, although the main mystery remains similar.

The movie keeps the major confrontation between Jeremy and Verity and the question surrounding the manuscript. However, the film adds more of the aftermath of Verity’s death, including Jeremy taking her body to the lake. It also uses Verity’s media appearances, including Hot Ones, as part of its larger idea about her public image and the difference between the writer people see and the person behind the stories.

The final moments also deliberately return to the film’s earlier Hot Ones material, adding another layer to the question of whether what we have watched should be taken at face value. Deep Focus Review notes that this final wrinkle is designed to make viewers question what really happened.
