Hal Jordan Returns to Rushville
John’s new life is interrupted when Bernadette tells him that Hal wants to apologize. Hal has spent around a decade in prison after taking responsibility for the events surrounding Rushville.
John goes to a diner to confront him. Instead of giving John the simple apology he expected, Hal brings up their complicated past. Their conversation quickly becomes hostile.
Hal accuses John of being afraid of the Green Lantern ring, while John reminds him of the people who died and the destruction left behind. The argument becomes physical when John punches Hal in the face, breaking his nose.
What makes this scene especially important is that we already know Hal will soon be found dead. The injury also explains the broken nose discovered during his autopsy.

Who Killed Hal Jordan?
Shortly after John leaves the diner, Sheriff Kerry Kane contacts him with shocking news: Hal Jordan is dead.
This brings the story back to the mystery established in the first episode. Hal has been shot at close range with a 9mm weapon. John is immediately placed in an uncomfortable position because he was one of the last people known to have seen Hal alive.
However, John does not appear to be responsible for the killing. The episode instead uses his connection to Hal to make the mystery more complicated. John knows that Hal was trying to make amends with people in Rushville, even though many residents still hated him.

Guy Gardner Arrives
The episode finally introduces Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion. In this version of the story, Guy is the Green Lantern who took over after Hal’s imprisonment and John’s decision to reject the ring.

There is also something darkly funny about the speech because Hal apparently expected a much larger and more important funeral than the tiny gathering he ultimately receives.
Why Does John Dig Up Hal’s Grave?
This is where the episode takes its biggest turn.
After the funeral, John returns to Hal’s grave at night and digs it up. He opens the coffin and removes the Green Lantern ring from Hal’s finger.
The ring has only about 5% of its charge remaining, but that is enough for John to use it.
John activates the ring and summons a stored projection of Hal Jordan.
What Is the Halogram?
The figure that appears at the end is not Hal’s resurrected body. It is a projection or stored version of Hal connected to his Green Lantern ring.
The episode treats this version of Hal as something that can preserve information from the original Lantern. That is especially important because the mysterious vault found earlier requires Hal’s voice.
When the Halogram looks down and sees Hal’s dead body inside the coffin, it immediately realizes something is wrong.

That does not necessarily mean John is ready to become a Green Lantern again. Instead, the episode suggests that his relationship with the ring is still unresolved.
His decision to take the ring from Hal’s grave is also morally complicated. He is trying to solve a murder, but he is doing it by breaking into the grave of someone he once considered a friend and rival.
