All About ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3: Will Netflix Ever Renew?

We hear a lot about The Sinner and whether or not it’ll be renewed for a third season on Netflix. The cast and crew have all expressed their desire to return at some time, but Netflix has yet to make up its mind. Here’s everything we know about Mindhunter season 3, according to the available information out there as of 2022.

In case you didn’t know, Mindhunter is one of Netflix’s best shows, and it follows two FBI agents who establish a new unit within the Bureau to study some of history’s most notorious killers. Check out our guide for a complete rundown of season 2 events here. All About ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3: Will Netflix Ever Renew?

Mindhunter Season 3 Continues to Be on Indefinite Hold

The series is based on the book by J.R. Ward, which was originally published in four volumes between 2013 and 2016. After three seasons of the show had aired, producers decided to cancel it after its fourth season due to insufficient viewership while still owing millions of dollars towards production expenses. The cast was released from their contracts and allowed to pursue other work as a result of this decision.

What the Cast Has Said About Season 3 of Mindhunter

The cast has been particularly vocal about the return of the show eventually. Let’s dive into what they’ve had to say:

Around the time of The Matrix 4’s release in late 2021, Jonathan Groff (who played Agent Smith in The Matrix 2 and 3) spoke to THR about Mindhunter’s future. He said the decision to postpone the program was similar to that of Chicago Bulls general manager Jerry Krause in 1997, when he put his team’s season on hold so they could rebuild before attacking again.

Groff later added: “The minute he says he wants to do another one, I’ll be there in a second. But I trust his vision and his instincts, and so I leave it always in his hands, as ever.”

Holt McCallany has been rather vocal on the show’s future, Tweeting out any news story touching on the subject. On KFC Radio back in May 2021, McCallany stated that he’d reply “Yes immediately” if the opportunity ever came again, but it’s up to David Fincher.

In the summer of 2020, he notably said something similar during an interview with GoldDerby, when he suggested that there could be another season and added “I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of Bill Tench and Holden Ford… I’m crossing my fingers.”

What would Mindhunter season 3 be about on Netflix?

According to Collider’s sources, one of the show’s producers recently spoke with Collider and spilled the beans on what season 3 of Mindhunter was going to be like. Andrew Dominik, who directed season 2 of the series, believes that season 3 had bigger goals than previous years and would head to Los Angeles.

What’s David Fincher working on next for Netflix?

Another positive indicator that Mindhunter may return is examining Fincher’s future projects. In late 2021 and early 2022, Fincher was filming his first major feature film for Netflix in the form of The Killer, a comic book adaptation.

That production will star. We have no idea what’s next on Fincher’s agenda after Beyond The Killer. A TV movie prequel to Chinatown from 1974 with Robert Towne writing the script was one of the previous Netflix projects announced.

Netflix has a four-year, exclusive film and TV deal that was announced in late 2020, so there’s still plenty more to come. Then there are a few of David Fincher’s other films on Netflix US, including the Academy-award winning Mank and Love, Death, and Robots (which returns for Volume 3 in May 2022), as well as docu-series Voir where he was an executive producer. So in conclusion, all of this talk but the show remains a distant hope.
