Netflix’s Summertime is a coming-of-age romantic drama set along Italy’s Adriatic coast. Ale’s motorcycle racing career is one of the biggest conflicts in the season. Racing is not simply a hobby for him. It is part of his identity and one of the things he wants to reclaim after his accident.
By the final episodes, Ale receives an opportunity to join a racing team in Spain. It is the kind of opportunity he has been waiting for, but accepting it means leaving Italy and, more importantly, leaving Summer behind.

What Happens Between Summer and Ale at the End?
Summer and Ale do not get a traditional romantic ending where everything is solved and they simply live happily ever after.
Ale chooses to pursue the racing opportunity in Spain. Their relationship is therefore placed under the pressure of distance just as it is beginning to become serious.
The ending is bittersweet rather than completely tragic. Summer understands that Ale needs to follow his own path, while Ale has to accept that pursuing his dream may mean being separated from the person he loves.
The finale therefore treats their separation as part of growing up rather than as proof that their relationship was meaningless.
Do Summer and Ale Break Up?
The Season 1 ending deliberately leaves some room for interpretation rather than giving viewers a simple, final breakup scene.
What is clear is that Ale leaves for Spain to continue his racing career. Summer remains in Italy, and the two are forced to face the reality of being apart.
The important point is that their feelings for each other have not simply disappeared. Their relationship has reached a point where both characters have to understand that love cannot always prevent difficult choices.

What Happens to Edo?
Edo spends much of the season struggling with his feelings for Summer. He has known her for a long time and hopes that their friendship could become something more.

By the end of the season, Edo is forced to accept that Summer’s feelings lie elsewhere. His storyline is therefore less about winning Summer and more about learning to deal with disappointment and move forward.

What Happens to Sofia?
Sofia’s story is one of the quieter but more emotional parts of Season 1. She develops romantic feelings for Summer but never fully expresses them.

By the finale, she has not turned her feelings for Summer into a relationship. Instead, she begins to understand that she needs to make choices for herself rather than constantly waiting for the perfect moment.
What Happens to Dario?
Dario also experiences considerable growth during the season. He begins as someone who is heavily influenced by Ale and uncertain about his own romantic life.
His friendship with Sofia becomes particularly important because she encourages him to be more confident and honest about what he wants.
By the end, Dario starts becoming more independent. His story reinforces one of the show’s larger themes: growing up means learning to make choices without always relying on someone else to tell you what to do.
What Does the Ending Really Mean?
The Season 1 ending is not really asking whether Summer and Ale are destined to be together forever. It is asking whether two people can care deeply about each other while still following their own paths.
Summer begins the season afraid of being left behind. By the finale, she has started to understand that another person’s departure does not have to destroy her.
Ale, meanwhile, has to accept that pursuing his dream may come with sacrifices. He cannot have complete control over both his career and his relationship.
That is why the ending feels bittersweet. There is love between them but love does not magically remove distance, ambition or personal responsibility.

Why Is the Title Summertime Important?
The title works on more than one level. Summer is literally the name of the main character, but summertime also represents a temporary period of freedom, romance and change.
The first season takes place during a summer when the characters are moving from adolescence toward adulthood. They fall in love, make mistakes, discover new parts of themselves and begin thinking about their futures.
Eventually, summer has to end. The arrival of another season mirrors the changes happening in their lives.
That idea gives the finale its meaning: some experiences are temporary, but that does not make them unimportant.
