Vanishing Point Ending Explained: What Really Happened to Tang Nuo?

Vanishing Point is a Chinese crime thriller that begins with a simple but frightening question: how can a nine-year-old boy disappear from an apartment building without leaving any clear trace? As the search for Tang Nuo continues, the story slowly reveals that his disappearance is connected to two other disturbing mysteries—a woman who was assaulted in her own home and a man who is secretly hiding his dead father’s body.

Directed by Cheng Wei-Hao, the film stars Zheng Kai, Liu Haocun and Roy Chiu. It was released in China on May 1, 2026, and later became available internationally through Netflix. The movie is adapted from Bei Baokang’s novel Sea Anemone, which had already inspired the 2022 television series The Disappearing Child.

What Is Vanishing Point About?

The story takes place mainly inside an ordinary apartment building. Tang Yu’s young son, Tang Nuo, suddenly disappears. There is no obvious sign that someone carried him out of the building, which makes the case even more disturbing.

At the same time, Lin Yutong, a woman living alone, is still dealing with the trauma of an earlier assault. In another part of the building, Yan Wu is trying to hide his father’s dead body because he is desperate to deal with his own financial problems.

At first, these look like three completely separate stories. That is one of the film’s main tricks. The deeper the investigation goes, the clearer it becomes that the people living in the building are connected by secrets they have tried very hard to keep hidden.

How Does Tang Nuo Disappear?

Tang Nuo’s disappearance is eventually connected to a hidden space inside the apartment building.

Xu Zhijie, who lives in the building and has worked on Lin Yutong’s apartment, secretly created a concealed passage between the apartments. He used this hidden route to enter Lin’s home without using the normal entrance. This secret passage is also connected to the mystery surrounding Lin’s assault.

Tang Nuo accidentally discovers the hidden route. What initially looks like a kidnapping is therefore much stranger. The boy has not simply been taken away by a stranger. His disappearance is connected to a secret part of the building that almost nobody knows exists.

This discovery is important because the same hidden space that Xu believed would protect his secrets eventually becomes the evidence that exposes him.

Who Assaulted Lin Yutong?

The person responsible is Xu Zhijie.

He had used his access to Lin’s apartment while working there to create a secret way of entering her home. This allowed him to approach her without leaving the usual signs of forced entry.

For much of the story, Lin does not know exactly who is responsible. The hidden passage finally gives the mystery a physical explanation.

It also changes the meaning of the apartment building. What once looked like an ordinary place where families and neighbors lived together is revealed to contain a hidden space used for terrible acts.

Did Xu Yingying Make Tang Nuo Disappear?

This is one of the most interesting questions in the ending, and the movie does not give a completely simple answer.

Xu Yingying is Xu Zhijie’s daughter. She knows that something is wrong with her father, and she understands more about the secrets inside the building than she initially admits.

She also becomes close to Tang Yu’s family. Some of her actions make it look as if she is deliberately moving events toward the discovery of her father’s crimes.

However, the film does not clearly say that Yingying planned Tang Nuo’s disappearance as a criminal mastermind. Instead, she is presented largely as a child who has been damaged by living with her father and wants to escape the life he has created.

There is an important difference between knowing what is happening and being responsible for everything that happens. The film keeps that difference deliberately unclear.

Is Tang Nuo Dead?

No. Tang Nuo survives.

His disappearance is eventually connected to the hidden passage, and he is rescued. This is one of the film’s biggest reveals because the audience spends much of the story wondering whether the missing child has been killed or taken far away.

Instead, Tang Nuo’s disappearance becomes the accident that starts exposing the much larger secret hidden inside the building.

What Happens to Xu Zhijie?

Xu Zhijie’s carefully protected secret finally begins to collapse.

Yan Wu becomes involved in the confrontation, and the situation turns violent as Xu tries to protect himself and prevent the truth from coming out. Yan eventually fights back instead of continuing to protect his own interests.

Lin Yutong also returns to confront Xu. She hits him with a bottle and knocks him unconscious.

This moment is important because Lin is not simply rescued by someone else. She gets an opportunity to stand up to the man who harmed her. The person who once used a hidden passage to enter her home is finally exposed because that same secret space can no longer remain hidden.

What Happens to Xu Yingying?

Yingying’s ending is more complicated than a simple punishment or villain reveal.

She has spent much of her life under the influence of her father, and the film suggests that his behavior has deeply affected her. Instead of treating her as responsible for everything Xu Zhijie has done, Tang Yu’s wife, A Yu, shows concern for the girl.

This gives Yingying the possibility of leaving her father’s household and entering a safer family environment.

That part of the ending gives the movie a small sense of hope. Yingying cannot change the family she was born into, but she may still have a chance to build a different life.

What Happens to Yan Wu?

Yan Wu has his own dark secret throughout the movie. After his father dies, Yan hides the body because he is desperate for money and wants access to financial benefits connected to his father.

His actions make him look suspicious and selfish, but his story eventually becomes more tragic.

Yan is eventually imprisoned. Later, Lin Yutong visits him and he learns something that makes his earlier decisions even more painful: his father had actually bought an insurance policy for him before his death.

Yan had believed that his father was only an obstacle between him and money. Discovering that his father had tried to provide something for him forces him to face how badly he had misunderstood the situation.

What Does the Hidden Wall and Passage Mean?

The hidden passage is more than a clever solution to the mystery.

It represents the secrets that the characters have tried to hide.

Xu Zhijie hides his crimes behind the wall. Tang Nuo accidentally discovers the passage. Lin’s assault is connected to it. Yan’s story becomes tangled with the same chain of events. What was built as a secret route eventually becomes the thing that exposes the truth.

By the end, the passage can be closed, but the damage caused by the people who used it cannot simply disappear.

The building may look normal again, but the people who lived through these events have been changed permanently.

What Does the Title Vanishing Point Mean?

The title Vanishing Point works on more than one level.

On the most obvious level, Tang Nuo literally vanishes. A child disappears from an ordinary apartment building and nobody can immediately explain where he has gone.

But other things also seem to vanish throughout the movie.

Lin Yutong’s assault is buried for months. Xu Zhijie’s crimes are hidden behind a wall. Yan Wu tries to make his father’s death disappear. Yingying herself wants to escape from the life controlled by her father.

So the title is really about people trying to make painful truths disappear.

The film’s message is that secrets can be hidden for a while, but hiding them does not erase what happened. Eventually, something brings them back into the light.
