Warning: Major spoilers for Below Season 1, Episode 6.
Below ends its six-episode first season by finally explaining what the creature wants and why Snook’s Arm has become the center of so much danger. Episode 6 turns the story away from a simple monster hunt and makes the real conflict much clearer: Calvin is not only fighting to save his family from a sea creature, but also trying to protect his home from people who want to take advantage of the town.
The finale, titled “The Unfathering Deep,” brings Calvin Penney, Wade, Fonda, the Crockers, and the giant squid into the same final conflict. Instead of simply killing the creature, Calvin finds another way to deal with it, while the Crocker family’s plans are finally exposed.
What Happens in Below Season 1 Episode 6?
The episode begins with Calvin and Wade out at sea after escaping the events of the previous episode. Their relationship has changed. Calvin finally admits that he was wrong to keep Wade away from the boats. For most of the season, Calvin has treated his son as someone who needs protecting, but he is now beginning to see that Wade is capable of standing beside him.
Back in Snook’s Arm, the situation is falling apart. The giant squid has attacked again, and the authorities are preparing to evacuate the town. The military believes the creature is too dangerous to leave alive.
At the same time, the truth about Jan Crocker becomes clearer. She is Jim Crocker’s daughter, and her actions throughout the crisis have been connected to her family’s interests. The Crockers are not simply trying to protect the town. They have much more to gain from controlling the land.

Why Does the Military Want to Kill the Squid?
Fonda explains what she has learned about the creature. The giant squid is not attacking Snook’s Arm for no reason. She is a mother protecting her eggs.
The strange iceberg in the harbor is actually connected to the creature’s reproduction. The water around Snook’s Arm is too warm for the eggs to survive, which has made the squid increasingly aggressive.
The military, however, sees only the immediate danger. The creature has already destroyed boats and killed people, so an airstrike is planned.
Fonda does not want the squid destroyed. She believes the creature is extraordinary and may be something science has never properly studied. Jim Crocker tries to use this against her by promising that she can study the remains after the military kills it.
Fonda refuses to go along with the plan.

What Are the Crockers Really After?
This is one of the biggest pieces of the finale.
The strange events in Snook’s Arm have been happening alongside a proposed resettlement of the town. The Crockers have encouraged people to leave, but there is a much bigger reason behind it.
Calvin discovers that valuable minerals, including cobalt and copper, are underneath the area. The land is therefore worth far more than the money being offered to the residents.
That changes the meaning of the resettlement completely. The monster is a real threat, but the Crockers are using the chaos around it to make their own plans easier.
In other words, the people of Snook’s Arm are fighting two different battles. One is against the creature in the water. The other is against people who see their homes as valuable property rather than a community.
Calvin’s Plan to Save the Squid
Calvin refuses to simply watch the military destroy the creature. He comes up with a risky alternative.
Instead of killing the squid, he decides to move the iceberg containing her eggs away from Snook’s Arm and into deeper, colder water.
It is a dangerous plan because Calvin has to work around the military operation while also dealing with Jim and Jan Crocker. Wade stays with his father, and the rest of the Penney family eventually helps with the plan.
Mary also becomes important during the attempt. As the family watches the iceberg, she takes the shot that helps break it apart. Calvin then uses his boat and a large net to pull the pieces of the iceberg away from the town.
Does Calvin Save the Squid?
Yes, but not in the way a normal monster story would handle it.
Calvin manages to tow the iceberg into deeper water. The squid follows it, because the iceberg is connected to her eggs and gives her young a better chance of surviving.
For a moment, it looks as though the military will still destroy everything. A helicopter arrives, and Jim Crocker pushes for the strike even though Calvin is inside the danger zone.
The military officer ultimately refuses to follow Jim’s order. By this point, the squid is no longer an immediate threat to Snook’s Arm, so there is no reason to launch the attack.
Calvin cuts the ropes and leaves the creature in deeper water.

What Happens to the Squid?
The squid does not survive forever. After releasing her eggs, she eventually dies.
This is important because the finale does not treat her as an evil monster that must be defeated. She was dangerous, but her behavior was driven by survival and the need to protect her young.
Fonda studies the eggs afterward, but the warm water has already caused a serious problem. None of them survive.
So Calvin saves the mother from being killed by the military, but he cannot completely solve the environmental problem that brought her to Snook’s Arm in the first place.
What Happens to Calvin and Wade?
The biggest personal change in the finale is between Calvin and Wade.
Calvin finally accepts that Wade is not simply a troubled young man who needs to be kept away from the sea. He sees his son’s ability and begins treating him like a member of the family business.
One year later, Wade is finally working on the boat with Calvin. Their relationship feels much stronger than it did at the beginning of the series.
Calvin also gets a new start by opening the Big Squid Distillery and Brewing Company. It is a strange but fitting ending for a man whose life has been tied to the sea, ice, and the creature that nearly destroyed his home.
Below Season 1 Ending Explained
The ending works because the giant squid turns out to be only part of the story.
At first, Below appears to be about a mysterious creature attacking a Newfoundland town. By the finale, the story has become more about family, survival, greed, and a changing environment.
The squid is dangerous, but she is also trying to survive. Her eggs cannot survive in the warmer water, so she has been pushed into an environment where she and the people of Snook’s Arm inevitably come into conflict.
Calvin’s decision to move the creature instead of killing her is therefore important. He chooses to solve the problem rather than simply destroy what he does not understand.
The Crockers provide the opposite approach. They see the crisis as an opportunity. While everyone is focused on the monster, they are interested in the valuable minerals beneath the town.
That makes the title Below work on more than one level. Something terrifying is literally below the water, but there are also secrets buried below the surface of the town itself.

What Does the Final Iceberg Mean?
The final scene gives the story one last mystery.
Calvin and Wade are back on the water when they encounter another iceberg.
On the surface, this could simply be another opportunity for Calvin’s ice business. But after everything that happened during the season, the iceberg feels much more unsettling.
The first strange iceberg was connected to the squid and her eggs. That makes the appearance of another iceberg an obvious warning that the story may not be completely finished.
It could suggest that other creatures, nests, or unexplained forces are still out there. It also connects to one of the show’s larger ideas about a changing environment. The sea is behaving differently, and the people living beside it may not understand everything that is coming.

Is Below Season 1 Ending a Happy Ending?
It is mostly hopeful, but it is not completely happy.
Calvin survives, Wade becomes part of his father’s work, and the immediate threat to Snook’s Arm is over. Fonda also gets the chance to study the creature and her eggs.
But the squid dies, her eggs do not survive, and the Crockers are still a problem. Most importantly, the final iceberg suggests that the strange events beneath the water may not be over.
So Below gives its characters a chance to breathe without pretending that everything has been fixed.
No. Calvin chooses to save the squid rather than kill her. He moves the iceberg away from Snook’s Arm so the creature can follow it into deeper water.
The squid is protecting her eggs. The unusual conditions around the town have brought her into conflict with the people living there.
The Crockers have a financial reason for wanting control of the area. Valuable minerals, including cobalt and copper, are believed to be beneath the land.
