At first, Sophie thinks the strange behavior is simply part of Mary’s unusual training system. The students eat disgusting food, suffer painful injuries and are expected to keep playing regardless of what happens to their bodies.
Fred, the academy’s strange equipment manager, makes tennis rackets using animal material. Mary also keeps leeches and treats them as part of her bizarre approach to health and training. The academy slowly turns ordinary sports ideas such as discipline, sacrifice and competition into something grotesque.
This is important because the horror is not really about tennis itself. The film takes the familiar phrase “no pain, no gain” and pushes it to an extreme where pain, sacrifice and even death become acceptable if they lead to victory. What Happens Between Sophie and Bana?

Why Is Sophie Hungry at the End?
Immediately after winning, Mary asks Sophie how she feels.
Sophie does not talk about happiness, relief or pride. She simply says:
“Hungry.”
This short answer is one of the most important details in the ending.
Earlier in the movie, Sophie struggles to eat the academy’s strange food. She is disgusted by the blood-like drinks and even struggles with the leeches. By the end, however, she has developed the appetite that Mary wanted to create in her.

In a literal sense, the movie leaves some of the transformation open to interpretation. But psychologically, Sophie has clearly become something different.
She began the story as a young athlete who wanted to improve her game. She still had a relationship with her father, cared about other people and developed genuine feelings for Bana.
By the ending, winning has become more important than those relationships. She has survived the academy by becoming increasingly similar to the people who controlled it.

Yes. The ending makes it clear that Sophie reaches Wimbledon after winning the academy’s final competition. The film moves toward her arrival at the famous tournament and presents it as the next stage of her journey.
However, the movie does not show Sophie actually winning Wimbledon. Her future as a professional champion is left open.
This is important because Sophie has not won a guaranteed Grand Slam title. She has only earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

Is Mary a Witch or Is the Academy Supernatural?

However, the film does not give a simple explanation saying that Mary is literally a witch or that a supernatural creature controls the academy.
That uncertainty is intentional. The academy can be understood as a strange horror institution, but its deeper horror comes from the human obsession with winning.
The director has described the story in terms of pressure, ambition and corruption. The film turns those ideas into physical horror instead of explaining everything through a conventional supernatural villain.
What Does the Ending Mean?
The ending of Bloody Tennis is mainly about the cost of ambition.
Sophie arrives at the academy believing that becoming a champion means working harder than everyone else. Mary teaches her a much darker lesson: if winning is the only thing that matters, eventually everything else becomes disposable.
Bana represents friendship and emotional connection. Nelly represents the older tradition of ruthless competition. Mary represents the system itself. Sophie eventually absorbs pieces of all of them.
That is why her Wimbledon opportunity is both a victory and a tragedy. She has reached the door she wanted to reach, but she has paid for it by giving up much of her empathy.

Why Is the Movie Called Bloody Tennis?
The title works on two levels.
On the surface, it refers to the film’s extremely violent approach to tennis. Players bleed, suffer injuries and face dangerous situations that turn matches into survival contests.
On a deeper level, “bloody” describes the price of ambition. Sophie does not simply win matches. She becomes stronger by surviving and overcoming people around her. The sport becomes a metaphor for a system where someone else’s loss is necessary for your success.
The filmmakers have also leaned into the contrast between the elegance of tennis and the ugliness of body horror. Sandra Guldberg Kampp explained that tennis was particularly useful because it is an elegant and visually beautiful sport, while also being a lonely and mentally demanding one.
The Real Meaning of Sophie’s Transformation
Sophie’s transformation is the heart of the movie.
At the beginning, she thinks she is going to the academy to learn how to play better tennis. By the end, the academy has taught her how to survive at any cost.
Her final “hunger” is therefore not just a joke or a disturbing final line. It tells us that Sophie has accepted the central rule of Mary’s world. She is no longer satisfied with simply being good enough. She wants more, and the movie suggests that there may be no natural limit to that desire.
In that sense, Sophie becomes both the survivor and the product of the system she entered.
