Small Prophets Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Small Prophets Season 1, Episode 2, titled Is This Legal? takes the strange idea introduced in the premiere and finally puts it to the test. Michael Sleep is no longer simply wondering whether his father Brian’s stories about homunculi are true. He decides to try creating them himself.

The episode keeps the show’s quiet British comedy intact, but there is a real emotional reason behind Michael’s bizarre experiment. His girlfriend Clea disappeared seven years ago, and he has never accepted that she is gone for good. If these tiny prophets really can answer questions truthfully, Michael may finally have a way to find out what happened to her.

What Happens in Small Prophets Season 1 Episode 2?

Michael starts the episode with a decision to make. His father Brian has told him about homunculi, strange little beings that can supposedly answer questions and tell the truth. At first, the whole idea sounds too ridiculous to take seriously. But Michael’s situation is different from most people. He has spent seven years waiting for Clea to return, while her family is ready to move on and treat her disappearance as a death.

Brian’s story gives Michael something he has not had for a long time: hope.

After another conversation with his father, Michael becomes more interested in the instructions for creating the creatures. He also finds himself noticing things around him that seem to point him toward the experiment. When he comes across some large jars, he takes them home and begins preparing his garden shed.

Michael Turns the Shed Into a Laboratory

The garden shed quickly stops looking like a normal shed. Michael clears the space and begins collecting the strange ingredients required by the instructions in Brian’s journal. His normally boring routine is suddenly replaced by something that looks like a homemade alchemy experiment.

The comedy comes from how seriously Michael approaches the whole thing. There is no dramatic laboratory or expensive equipment. He is essentially trying to create magical beings in a cluttered garden shed while his increasingly suspicious neighbours wonder what he is doing.

Michael even calls in sick from work so he can concentrate on the experiment. When he discovers that he needs supplies from his workplace, he has to sneak back to the store and ask Kacey for help.

Kacey Starts Getting Closer to Michael

Kacey is one of the more important parts of the episode because she gives Michael something besides his obsession with Clea. She is curious about him, and unlike some of his other co-workers, she does not seem interested in simply making fun of him.

Later, Kacey invites Michael out for drinks with their colleagues. He accepts, although the evening does not go particularly well for him.

Michael becomes the target of jokes from some of his co-workers, and after a few drinks he starts talking more openly about his life. He tells Kacey about his strange experiment and the creatures he is trying to grow.

It is an awkward conversation, but it also matters. Kacey begins to understand that Michael is not simply the strange man everyone at work thinks he is. There is grief underneath his odd behaviour, and his search for Clea is much more personal than it first appeared.

What Are the Homunculi?

The word homunculus is not something invented for Small Prophets. It comes from Latin and means roughly “little man” or “little human.” In alchemical traditions, the homunculus was imagined as a tiny artificial human that could be created through mysterious processes.

The idea became especially associated with Renaissance and early modern alchemy. Stories about artificially creating miniature humans appeared in occult and philosophical traditions, turning the homunculus into a symbol of the old dream of creating life through secret knowledge.

Small Prophets takes that old idea and gives it a very different purpose. Michael is not trying to become a powerful alchemist. He wants answers. The homunculi are valuable to him because Brian claims they can tell him the truth about Clea.

That makes the strange fantasy element surprisingly connected to the show’s emotional story. Michael is using something impossible because ordinary ways of finding Clea have failed him.

Does Michael’s Experiment Work?

Yes. This is the big reveal at the end of Episode 2.

After returning home from his night out with Kacey, Michael checks the jars in his shed. Until this point, there has been no guarantee that the strange recipe will actually work. Michael has been following instructions based on his father’s memories and an old journal, so there is always the possibility that the entire thing is nonsense.

Then something moves inside one of the jars.

A strange creature appears in the murky liquid, confirming that Michael has actually created something.

The moment changes the direction of the series. Michael no longer has to ask whether his father’s story about homunculi is real. Now he has to figure out what these creatures can do and whether they can really give him the answer he wants.

Episode 2 Ending Explained

The ending is important because Michael’s biggest problem is still unsolved. The creature appearing in the jar does not immediately tell him where Clea is. Instead, it proves that the first step of Brian’s strange plan may actually work.

Michael has spent years trapped between hope and reality. Everyone else seems ready to accept that Clea is gone, but he has never been able to do that. The homunculi give him a possible path forward, even if that path is completely bizarre.

There is also an interesting danger in the idea. Michael wants truthful answers, but he does not know what the answers will mean for him. Finding out what happened to Clea could finally give him peace, or it could destroy the last bit of hope he has been holding onto.

Why the Episode Matters

Episode 2 works because it does not rush to make the fantasy the most important thing in the story. The homunculi are strange, but Michael’s loneliness is still at the center of the episode.

His experiment is really an attempt to move forward without letting go of Clea. That contradiction makes him more interesting. He wants an answer, but he may not be ready for whatever that answer is.

The growing friendship between Michael and Kacey also gives the story another direction. Kacey sees more of Michael than his co-workers do, and their conversation at the pub suggests that she could become an important part of his strange journey.

Does Michael create a homunculus?

Yes. The experiment appears to work. Near the end of the episode, Michael discovers that something has appeared inside one of the jars, confirming that the strange creatures are real.

Why does Michael want to create a homunculus?

Michael hopes the homunculi can help him find answers about Clea, his girlfriend who disappeared seven years earlier. He has never fully accepted that she is gone and sees the creatures as a possible way to learn what happened to her.

What is a homunculus?

A homunculus is a legendary artificial miniature human associated with alchemy and occult traditions. The word comes from Latin and roughly means “little man.”

Does Kacey know about Michael’s experiment?

Yes. Michael eventually tells Kacey about the strange experiment he is carrying out. Although the idea sounds bizarre, she begins to understand that his actions are connected to his unresolved feelings about Clea.
